The Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe today rubbished the claims that he is receiving a salary of Rs.2.5 million along with a pension from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Responding to a query from a reporter during a press conference held today, Weerasinghe said such claims have no substance.

"Those claims are completely untrue. I'm not getting any pension from the IMF. During the time I was with the IMF on behalf of the country, I was paid a certain amount. That’s all.

My salary at the Central Bank is Rs.400, 000 per month. In addition to that, as the Central Bank Governor I'm entitled to an official car and a residence," he said.

Weerasinghe also said the salary of the Central Bank Governor used to be around Rs.150, 000 but it was increased to Rs.400, 000 by his predecessor.

He further said unlike his predecessor, he doesn’t have an extensive security detail consisting of personnel from security forces.

He also said he has no intention in accepting any pension benefits deriving from his stay as the Central Bank Governor.

His Salary should be per with a cabinet minister and a supreme court judge. Not less.

Central Bank Governor Vacancy Thursday, 24 November 2022 04:09 PM

I don't think any qualified person will take up the Central Bank Governor job for this salary. He is lying.

    Gunadasa Friday, 25 November 2022 04:14 AM

Don't you realize that he came to help Sri Lanka and not to earn money

    Reformist Thursday, 24 November 2022 04:15 PM

Why bother becoming the CB Governor of this wonderland for that money and then deal with lunatics in the Parliament. People don't need to wonder why high calibre professionals leave and work in more sensible countries with intelligent people for better money. It is a no brainer.

Sri Lankans are the best in the world to create rumours. What better nationality will you find that will create rumours out of nothing!

Anura Nanayakkara Thursday, 24 November 2022 05:15 PM

Central Bank Governerner is a very honest person and he had fully disclosed all his salary details etc. He should be properly treated and respected too for his hard work at Central Bank as Governerner. He is not like a corrupt politician.

    Shehan Thursday, 24 November 2022 05:34 PM

Straightforward guy. Whatever criticism.. he gave up a lot to come back and help the country re-build. Kudos

    lankaputha Friday, 25 November 2022 08:49 AM

400,000 LKR is his basic salary... All other percs, allowances etc comes to 2 M addition to the basic.. His IMF salary is nothing to be bothered and even if he got 100 Million, it is good for the country

    jaya Thursday, 24 November 2022 05:48 PM

Hm 400,000 is what a deputy manager receives in a small to middle size company. Just about a $1000. Someone doing part time odd jobs in Australia earns more than that.

    C Fernando Friday, 25 November 2022 08:02 PM

You may be unable to comprehend that there are some people for whom money is not the only thing that matters.

    Lokka Thursday, 24 November 2022 05:56 PM

In my opinion 400000 is not enough for holding such responsible position with such expertise knowledge in the field. Compare his salary with the CEB engineers earning nearly a million with other perks and their taxes paid by the electricity consumers.

    Hadam Thursday, 24 November 2022 06:08 PM

Sounds reasonable to me. Juast a chartered accountant get around 400k per month in top audit companies likes of KPMG and Moodi's. He his the Central bank governer with highest rensponsibilty so its very reasonable to have even 2.5 million per month.

Dilshan Perera Thursday, 24 November 2022 06:34 PM

If only we ever had presidents and ministers as upright and capable as him.. we would have been a successful country..

    HBW Thursday, 24 November 2022 07:12 PM

Good on you for clarifying. Cabral you were just another person sucker for the country's wealth.

    ravin Thursday, 24 November 2022 07:20 PM

Doctor Weerasinghe ! Do not worry much about uneducated thieves and their stooges utter in panic. As far as we know your academic and professional qualifications are much much more higher than those who made those accusations. Keep your calm and do your job honestly as far as possible. Future generation will take care of all people who did a good job for our mother land.

Sam Silva Thursday, 24 November 2022 08:38 PM

What about other fringe benefits and plus your monthly salary of Rs.400 000.00. By the time we pay all these people, the public servants, politicians, and polital appointees from our taxes and what the government earned there is nothing left even to pay the debts. So we keep on printing money and borrowing. Life goes on in our country.

    Dee Thursday, 24 November 2022 10:28 PM

Hey Sammy! If what he is saying is the truth. It is a very poor salary and perk. It may be big for you put would hardly get through a week for a person of his stature. Either he is lying or he has enough back up funds to take him through!

    David Thursday, 24 November 2022 11:11 PM

Even 2.5 rupees is reasonable. A CB level job is a reputable one and have to pay a salary to attract a proper professional, or else no one will take the job.

    Jayantha Thursday, 24 November 2022 11:11 PM

Another Gota. You kept the press conference to just clarify about your salary.lol.what a waste of money. Just another talker nothing else

    Aquarius Friday, 25 November 2022 01:58 AM

Kudos to the man for being forthright about his earnings. People can see he does not have any security details like our third-grade politicians. His perks are only a residence and a vehicle. Even the pension is declined. If all this is true, I wonder how our ministers, some without an ounce of qualifications, compare their bloated earnings. Their monthly salaries must be 10 times more the various perks (vehicles, security, free fuel etc. etc.). Clearly our politicians are there to plunder the public money and I have not seen or heard anyone making any sacrifice.

Thambi Vijay Friday, 25 November 2022 02:05 AM

What he gets or got from IMF is not anyone's business.

    Fred Friday, 25 November 2022 03:52 AM

At least double the salary. That may bring it on par with other responsible positions in the country. He is a key player in the recovery .It is an impossible job in my view, dealing with politicians and the economy at the same time, hope they have given him a comprehensive medical cover

    Reza Friday, 25 November 2022 05:17 AM

Present CB Governor is an honest and religious man. When I see the trolls slandering, get reminded: Sri Lankans are masters at throwing mud and negativity for everything except seeing their own faults.

    Samaranayaka K Friday, 25 November 2022 05:20 AM

Rajapaksha habichole political culture always set the stage for officials like CB Governor, Defense Secretary, Chiefs of tri forcers etc. to present media shows. People won't get anything from this. When the country was running well in the past, none of these officials appear in media so much. As they have no immediate solutions to any issue, they try to display transparency and accountability through media and deceive people.

    Sinna Friday, 25 November 2022 05:47 AM

Inefficient, lowly educated but selfish and greedy Cabraal raised salary and pension as to suit to his fancy, I suggest you to bring it back to its Rs.150000 with other perks considering current situation of the country, which is reasonable, then publish it to quiet inquisitive fellows,

    Terrence K Friday, 25 November 2022 06:36 AM

He has poured out his guts in revealing his salary and other stipends which no other will do to an inquisitive segment of society who are like idiots who will never divulge their income or underhand commissions that they surreptitiously receive. Why not pose this question to the Rajapakse brigade and their bootlickers who have stashed billions according to the media in offshore accounts and other accounts using fictitious names in money laundering. ? Instantly all those inquisitive minds will receive a tap at their door by some of their stooges who are placed in high positions telling all of you to report to the 4th F.......... for interrogation ? So keep your mouths zipped which is healthy for your being !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Ranjan Friday, 25 November 2022 07:05 AM

But imagine population of this republic is approx 22M and there are around 2M Govt Servants. In the last voted family

Ali Baba Friday, 25 November 2022 08:30 AM

The peanut level of brain thinking in this country is the reasons monkeys vote for monkeys. When gentleman like him have sacrificed personal benefits, they are there only for the love of the country. But monkeys will never understand. Because they think everyone is a monkey like them

    Sam Friday, 25 November 2022 12:41 PM

If true which I have no reason to doubt then you are a good man indeed. Could be earning many times more easily in any other country. Sounds like you are just back to help. Needs to boot out all of the old gaurd and replace with like minded fellows.

    Aquarius Friday, 25 November 2022 01:08 PM

This is a challenge to all those parliamentarians, come forward and divulge your earnings and assets. Not a single soul will do it because that is our Sri Lankan culture. The majority did not have much when they entered parliament, but today, most everyone is loaded and living like the proverbial kings. This is the true Sri Lanka and now we have a President who is hell bent on protecting and looking after them. Jayawewa!

    Ben Friday, 25 November 2022 01:10 PM

I don’t know much about Dr. NW, but he was not choice of rajapakshssa, means most possibly reasonable character unlike jayasundara or attigala or Cabrral ,in future we will assess him according to his work, anyway rejected Ravi K poking his finger every where seems not much happy with NW
