The government says that following discussions with public sector trade unions, a new formula will be created afterwhich a public sector wage hike will only be introduced next year.

Acting Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama made these remarks while presenting the budget speech in parliament a short while ago.

Some erstwhle supporters pretend to have forgotten the promises made by UPFA during the presidential elections that a wage hike of Rs. 2500.- will be given to public sector this year. The voter buffalos decided that the 2500 promised by the UPFA is more likely than the Rs.10,000.- hike promised by the oppositon. So now, it has turned out to be another broken promise and so called patriotic voters appear to have been taken for a right royal ride as usual. Serves them right.

Salary increment for the public servants is a long overdue. They should have been awarded good increment at least last year. This is one of the main reason that the government departments have become highly corrupted and inefficient.
