UN happy with security

The United Nations office in Colombo said today that it is pleased with the security being provided by the government of Sri Lanka and has no security concerns. “The office of the UN in Colombo is like that of any office anywhere in the world the host nation guarantees the protection of the UN staff,” UN Spokesperson in Colombo Tom Hockley told the Daily Mirror.

He further stated that the UN office is in constant contact with the Sri Lankan government through the appropriate diplomatic channels and there are no concerns for the safety of UN staff in Colombo. “We have not made any request to the government for additional security and we are quite satisfied with the security being provided to us, there is no cause for concern,” Hockley said.

New York depicted a different picture when Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said in his statement, released along with the report, that he trusts the Sri Lankan government to continue to respect its obligations to the safety of UN staff in Colombo. (Dianne Silva)
