Solution not instant noodles

28 June 2010 02:19 am - 55     - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}

President Mahinda Rajapaksa says the final political solution to the war which ended last year will take time and cannot be instant like “instant noodles”.

In an interview with India’s Times of India published today, President Rajapaksa also said that he was not bothered about the EU GSP plus tariff concessions adding that moves to suspend it to the country was politically motivated.

“We will take our own time and the solution, you can't ask for an instant solution like instant noodles. Constitutions are not for one or two days. It is not a magazine which is published weekly or monthly. We can't change the Constitution frequently. We will have to take our own time. We will certainly change all this. My commitment remains,” President Rajapaksa said regarding the political solution.

He also said that the GSP plus concessions were offered following the tsunami and now that the tsunami rehabilitation is over the government needs to look at new markets.

“Our people must know this: when I called the elections, they (EU) immediately called for suspension of tariff concessions. It was a politically motivated decision. If the EU doesn't want to give it (concessions), let them keep it. I don't want it. We have gone and explained what we have done. Now we have appointed it (an inquiry commission), not because someone wanted me to, but because I am committed to that,” he said.

Asked to comment on claims by Eastern Province chief minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan that he does not have enough powers, the President said that it was because he had powers that he was able to go to India with a full delegation recently.

“He has all the powers. Now he (Eastern Province chief minister Pillaiyan) has gone abroad. He has taken 27 members or so abroad. They have gone on a study tour! I thought that money could have been used to build some roads. These are not controlled by us,” President Rajapaksa said in the interview with the Times of India. (Daily Mirror online)

Shame on everyone harping on petty issues. You have forgotten the hardship that all Sri Lankens suffered for the last 3 decades of terror. Now that is all over all the Sri Lankans enjoy the freedom and dignified lively hood. No one can find solutions overnight and there will be prosperity and peace in the near future. All we need is to rally round our President and support to develop our country to be self sufficient . No matter what the political party that you represent you must think of nation building not party politics.

    Concerned Monday, 28 June 2010 08:52 AM

Jaminda Mendis Monday, 28 June 2010 10:16 AM

Ministers needs to stop wasting time for unwanted issues like speaking for hours here and there. Then time will be enough to resolve matters.

    Pathirana Monday, 28 June 2010 10:21 AM

Its true that the political solutions not like “instant noodles” but atleast it should like a String oppers.

    Ind Monday, 28 June 2010 10:30 AM

    Ind Monday, 28 June 2010 10:35 AM

Don't talk nonsense. What are the Roads renamed to Sinhala ?? People like Karuna is given said facilities as he helped the government to eradicate LTTE. And last part of your comment, army never going to build houses for military in NORTH, it's north central. You have to be more careful when commenting. Otherwise it will make insurgence among communities.

    DT Monday, 28 June 2010 10:35 AM

there is no such thing as a 'tamil area'. it is ONE sri lanka. the sooner you understand this, the sooner you'll become a good citizen

    CP Monday, 28 June 2010 10:39 AM

Sir, Can we adopt the same principle to "Amendements to Constitution" (in a slow pace) as you said. As we need to study all the details in it consequences, repurcussions etc etc.

    Fairose Monday, 28 June 2010 11:57 AM

During the election campaign, everything was instant noodles for great president because he found solutions over-night. Reduce the price of fuel, gas and foodstuff.

    lankalion Monday, 28 June 2010 01:08 PM

    Wasantha Monday, 28 June 2010 01:12 PM

Fully agree with you Mr. President. But the problem is why you are so hurry to amend the constitution?. Because you have applied the "instant noodles" mechanism in this regard. Is this not a clear cut double standard?.

    Deva Monday, 28 June 2010 01:29 PM

He and the government needs another two more terms. That is why he is busy in formulating the new constitution

    I Hussein Monday, 28 June 2010 02:27 PM

    ss Tuesday, 29 June 2010 06:40 AM

those road names were in sinhalese in the past. Jaffna was known as 'dambakola patuna' during king Devanampiyatissa's reign; The Sri Maha Bodhi tree was ceremonially received by the king of Lankadeepa , that was King Devanampiyatissa at 'Dambakola patuna waraya [harbour] in 232 B.C

    Saradial Monday, 28 June 2010 06:33 AM

But can extend Precedent's term like instants noodles right?

    ### Monday, 28 June 2010 03:42 AM

You have great leadership MR. we sri lankans are proud of you.

    Sam Monday, 28 June 2010 04:39 AM

Sir.. You have been in power for almost 10 years. Is 10 years time an 'instant noodle'?

Human Voive Monday, 28 June 2010 04:51 AM

Has the government taken even a single step to find the ethnic solution? Instead
--The road names in Jaffna are changed to Sinhala or Sinhala & English. Tamil is removed. What's the reason behind it.
--- The lead terrorists (KP, Karuna...) has given luxary life and the innocent youths who have been forcefully taken/ brain foced and taken into LTTE are still wasting their life in the so call refugee camps..without any future hopes.
---Wasting millions of money for useless events like Indian Film Festivals, while the ordinary people are suffering to live with the high cost of living.
--- The Army commander is issuing public statement saying that they are going to build houses for security forces in the north while the north people are living as homeless and hopeless.

Hope Truth will win one day and the innocent people will get relief.

    part Monday, 28 June 2010 05:38 AM

Yeah, we'll wait another 30 or 40 years to see what the problem is and then deliberate for another 50 years to think about solving this problem. Hopefully someone in the Family will be ruling still!

    skoda Monday, 28 June 2010 05:39 AM

**** )You don't need to worry about GSP but the poor garment workers and companies are worrying.
****)Why are sinhalese occupied in liberated Tamil areas? This might increase the anger of tamils.
****)This gvt never worries about any Human Rights Reports or rejecting any Foreign moves against SL

    Gamini Monday, 28 June 2010 05:54 AM

Agree. Meantime, anyone cannot cook a meal during 6 month time. The ways you are doing things and the motives are not towards political solution. It leads to china, myanmar administration

    Thomas Monday, 28 June 2010 05:59 AM

The President and his Ministers can say whatever they want, but the poor man's tommy & the IDPs cannot wait until the GOSL find time to solve the problems

    true-citizen Monday, 28 June 2010 05:59 AM

This is the sri lankan style of solution.... Cant you see how the dialog changed during and after war... During the war... political solution for tamil, Problems of minorities... after war.... No political solution, we are living peacfuly... no bombs anywhere..... no minority in sl, all are majority.. This is what sri lanka is... Till they achive there target they will act nicely... Once they achived it, they want take care of you.... Same in politics... jobs... street.... Ignorance....

Mohamed Shafraz Monday, 28 June 2010 06:05 AM

They don't ask Instant noodles but at lease you can start to cook.

    JayPee Monday, 28 June 2010 06:14 AM

Mr. President, what happened to the noodle you got Prof. Vitharana to cook ? I am referring to the APC process.

    Sekar Monday, 28 June 2010 06:23 AM

Excelent Mr President you know to hit the nail on the head..
No leader has had the backbone to be so bold and honest.

    Seneviratna Monday, 28 June 2010 06:27 AM

I am amazed at the interview given by the President. He has delivered what had to be dished out so well and has not minced his words. This is the leadership people need and
nations cannot be bullied like in the colonial days. EU has no moral right to dictate terms to us unless we are slaves and dependeant on them. Without the GSP plus we will manage and find other ways. It is not the end of the road. EU will regret it soon as Sri Lanka will seek other ways to get closer to nations that support us.

Kumar Wijayasekara Monday, 28 June 2010 06:29 AM

Why you bother as long as you and your clan enjoy all the perks. Let the ordinary people to suffer.

Tharaka Chanaka Monday, 28 June 2010 03:35 AM

I hope prices of instant noodles don't increase after this...

    Ruwan Monday, 28 June 2010 06:50 AM

    Only slogas no solutions.

Lal Hannadige Monday, 28 June 2010 06:55 AM

    niluuka Monday, 28 June 2010 06:57 AM

    YES.....................! BUT..................

Murshid Idroos Monday, 28 June 2010 07:03 AM

Mr President You would cook for another thirty years mark my word

    faizalsamsu Monday, 28 June 2010 07:08 AM

Of course, MR is not brothered about GSP or about people as he is not going to feel the pressure what we feel after losing jobs n spending months n months at home without a job....

    Sajith Monday, 28 June 2010 07:23 AM

Not only GSP plus, we can see more sanctions in future.

    Dee Monday, 28 June 2010 07:25 AM

    Kavitha Monday, 28 June 2010 07:57 AM

    Kavitha Monday, 28 June 2010 07:58 AM
