Inquiries will be made regarding the Saudi maid who had returned to the country with 23 nails inserted into her body, Kingsley Ranawaka, Chairman of the Foreign Employment Bureau told Daily Mirror online

He added that no complaints have been made regarding the said abuse to the Foreign Employment Bureau and that an official will be sent to the Matara hospital where the maid is receiving treatment.

Mr. Ranawaka stated that an inquiry into the alleged abuse will be made first before any investigation takes place as no complaints or details, including the passport number of the woman were known. (Daily Mirror online)

    Reality Tuesday, 24 August 2010 07:22 AM

JRJ turned all our Farmers to Tailors and Maids. This is our open economy. How can we stop the maids who bring the foreign exchange to run the country. The govt can not even think of banning the maids going to the middle east, if they do there will be riots on the streets with the current cost of living. No choice in the near future.

I know the talent of our lawyers in Sri Lankan Embassy of Saudi Arabia. They dont know the labour law even. Our lawyers english is poor as well and their arabic is nil. Question is who appointed these people. The other embassies in Saudi Arabia (philipines) are powerfull. Because they have smart people.

Palitha Heenthotuwa Tuesday, 24 August 2010 07:29 AM

I am sure you are one of economics specialists who have secret strategies for survival.

Why not share with us your micro economic plan to survive with a couple of billion dollars reduction in national income and close to a million additional mouths to feed, and provide employment.

Ibnu Batuta Tuesday, 24 August 2010 07:29 AM

What a brutal way of treating a maid... if what is told is true?

Palitha Heenthotuwa Tuesday, 24 August 2010 07:31 AM

There is a fully fledged embassy in Riyadh full of political appointees who are clueless about their responsibilities.

Stop sending all the DOMESTIC workers to MIDDLE EAST...!

All arabs think that the SRI LANKAN men don't have a back bone. that's why we are sending poor women for domestic work.

Please the GOV should take action about this. We know GOV can't force SAUDI ARABIA. but GOV can stop sending the people to SAUDI.

    dannybo Tuesday, 24 August 2010 09:13 AM

Saudi Arabia is a most intolerant society where various inhuman cruelties occur behind the veiled society.

    Murshid Tuesday, 24 August 2010 09:34 AM

Due to the massive foreign exchange we earn by exporting maids..............the Government is unable to think of a ban. There are no alternatives better than crying!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Gamini Tuesday, 24 August 2010 09:49 AM

    What barbarians !

    xlntgson Tuesday, 24 August 2010 09:51 AM

Black magic or hoodoo, which is severely punished in Wahabi sect of Saudi Arabia! The govt. can complain on that.

    roger Tuesday, 24 August 2010 10:03 AM

Where is the legal support for her? She is a Sri lankan from our country.

Why don’t these intentional human cruelty practices in Saudi, get any international media attention?

    AHAMED Tuesday, 24 August 2010 04:46 PM

Mahmood Ashraf Monday, 23 August 2010 07:16 PM

The Foreign Ministry and The Employment Bureau are responsible for Sri Lankan citizens working abroad,
The Gulf is a very nasty place! When these Saudis come to Sri Lanka we treat them so well, but they treat our people like this?

lanka silva Monday, 23 August 2010 07:29 PM

Where are the 'Human rights activists'? Wimal malli, Mervyn aiyya, you are the only ones who can make some noise about this!

Dr Rifai Monday, 23 August 2010 07:45 PM

The Sri Lankan government should make an official complaint about such ruthless abuse! This is against Islamic law!

    banda Monday, 23 August 2010 08:10 PM

What is the foreign affairs ministry doing in this regard? Do the dollars they earn, forgive the abuses against them?

    Kamiss Monday, 23 August 2010 09:13 PM

This is the most barbaric act of cruelty that I have heard of in my entire life! As a Muslim, I feel ashamed and disgusted of this inhuman act, on a fellow human being! We Muslims must take this up, very strongly, to pressurise the Saudi rulers to provide immediate redress! ALL MUSLIM ORGANIZATIONS, please look into this!

Chaminda Tilakumara Monday, 23 August 2010 09:16 PM

Just wondering where 'Human Rights Watch,' 'Amnesty International' & Mrs Hilary Clinton are?

    kumara Monday, 23 August 2010 10:06 PM

I have repeatedly said that the GOSL must establish a proper surveilance system for our women, who contribute so much towards our nation! Neither any minister nor official really cares for them. Someone once said that the Arabs regard cows and women equals? I guess he was right!

    Kamalan Monday, 23 August 2010 10:55 PM

Over to you 'Human Rights Watc' & 'Amnesty International' for your action ...

    Nanda Tuesday, 24 August 2010 12:11 AM

These things happen in this world ... Hard to believe!
    Wish you a speedy recovery!

    farrhan Tuesday, 24 August 2010 12:25 AM

The GOSL should take the Saudi government to task & MR must take a stand against it, like he did with the EU durring the NE War!

    farook Tuesday, 24 August 2010 03:45 AM

Stop the recruitment of maids to the middle east. The husbands send their wives to suffer and enjoy themselves.

    Mark Monday, 23 August 2010 06:54 PM

These Saudis must be held accountable! I hope that I'm wrong here, but I doubt that justice will be served here. The folks who govern us do not have the guts to speak and act against the atrocities committed by these Arabs! Here is a good opportunity to stage a protest against abuses committed by them!

    Bakamoona Tuesday, 24 August 2010 03:54 AM

These girls go to other countries looking for wealth, and end up like this. At least if these nails are made out of gold she wouldn't have mind it, I hope.

    citizen1 Tuesday, 24 August 2010 03:55 AM

Speaks volumes for the sadistic and mentally imbalanced nature of employers in that place. 'SICKO'

Smart Aleck Tuesday, 24 August 2010 04:03 AM

And yet they keep going and asking for more!

    azath Tuesday, 24 August 2010 04:11 AM

This is cruel, govt should take a decision to send our ladies for such a place or should protect them with stringent measures.

    Batepola Tuesday, 24 August 2010 04:17 AM

please stop sending house maids to saudi Arabia. this is a bloody hellish country. take action about this matter as soon as possible.

    tha Tuesday, 24 August 2010 04:25 AM

I dont know why the government sends ladies as maids here. I also work in the Middle east....I have seen how they behave here....These ladies dont know what they are doing all the time..pathetic.........

Podi Guru Tuesday, 24 August 2010 04:59 AM

There are too many horror stories coming back from that region not to believe that much of it is true. When one goes there--and I have been--one loses all control of his/her mobility because one's passport is taken by the employer. In practice, these women become prisoners in the job, whether it is a good one or not. I think many of the jobs are not particularly good. When it comes to a woman from a male-dominated culture going to live in another male-dominated culture, and she is probably not well educated, what happens to her? She needs support from her home country, and I think she and her sisters and brothers are not receiving it.

    Fairose Tuesday, 24 August 2010 05:02 AM

Saudi Arabia is a barbaric country that has laws of the jungle. All the laws are designed to protect the Kingdom and hide their sins. I am a muslim, I was in that country for 10 Long years. Sri Lanka government should ban sending ladies for employment in Saudi Arabia.

Mithraka Fernando Tuesday, 24 August 2010 05:07 AM

Saibu Nana Tuesday, 24 August 2010 06:02 AM

    Kingdom of Barbrians.....

    Perumal Tuesday, 24 August 2010 06:02 AM

Ha! ha!! All the laws are designed (manipulated) to protect the kingdom!!! Just like in Sri Lanka ; so nothing to worry.
