Salman backs IIFA in Lanka

3 June 2010 12:37 pm - 54     - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}

Bollywood actor Salman Khan says boycotting the Indian International Film Academy (IIFA) awards in Colombo is not the right thing to do. Khan is in Colombo to make up for the depletion in star power at the event being held from today to June 5.

Protests over the Tamil issue may have kept some of Bollywood's biggest names away from the India International Film Academy (IIFA) awards this year. NDTV managed to catch Salman and ask him about the controversy.

Salman said, "I don't really understand this. If there are some people here who are not doing well and are in trouble then we have come to entertain them. We are here to give them something.

He further said, "This way we won't be able to visit Kashmir, Gujarat or Afghanistan. If our people are in difficulty we should not abandon them."

Sri Lanka as a venue for IIFA has angered many Tamil supporters in India, who allege the Sri Lankan government of killing Tamils civilians at the height of the conflict between army and LTTE last year. A group of Tamils had marched from superstar Amitabh Bachchan's Pratiksha bungalow to his Jalsa residence in Mumbai last month urging him to boycott the Colombo awards ceremony.

The South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce (SIFCC) has said that it will go ahead with the boycott of Bollywood actors who are participating in the IIFA weekend. (NDTV)

    Nimal Sunimal

The point is Salman has not understood as to why the film stars were requested to boycott. Afterall he is only a actor and not a interlectual to understand certain values. Hope at least you understand the point!!!!!!!!!

Now Salman Khan is hero , Amithab is zero isn't it?

    Friday, 04 June 2010 04:03 AM

i think Salman has understood it very well.. whilst all those others have backed off due to their inability to understand truth.

    Friday, 04 June 2010 04:04 AM

Salman known as a rebel does not understand gravity of anything!

    Friday, 04 June 2010 04:05 AM

The South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce (SIFCC) has taken the protest against the latest edition of the International Indian Film Academy’s (IIFA) awards to another level, resolving not to cooperate with any member of the film fraternity who attends the ceremony scheduled to be held in Colombo from June 3-5.

    Friday, 04 June 2010 04:05 AM

The brand ambassador himself did not take a chance. This is an award ceremony without the bride and the groom!

    Friday, 04 June 2010 04:11 AM

    Hats off to Salman.
All Sri Lankans should boycott the film " Raavan " which is releasing next week.

    Friday, 04 June 2010 04:23 AM

The issue of Tamils mistreated in Sri Lanka is a myth given publicity by LTTE sympathizes. Most Tamils have taken political asylum based on this. Now with peace they are scared that they hold no grounds whatsoever. If any one comes to Colombo they should visit Wellawatte extending up to Dehiwela and see for them self that 60% of Tamils live normally and most above middle income standard. Sri Lanka has the highest GDP in South Asia. Tamils work along with Sinhalese without any issue. People who live aboard post comments and they have not even visited Jaffna !!!

    Friday, 04 June 2010 04:32 AM

Point? whats the point. You are the person who has not understood the point, at all. Salman is trying to do something for displaced Tamils, what are those south Indian puppets doing for Sri lankan Tamils. Shame on them.

    Friday, 04 June 2010 04:38 AM

thank you, Thanks a lot :)

    Friday, 04 June 2010 04:46 AM

By the way Kugan the IIFA is only for Actiors and their performances and nothing to do with the Human Rights issues or any other things.... Especially not for you.....

    Friday, 04 June 2010 04:56 AM

Indians are a BIG JOKE. Do you know WHY Indians have these IIFA shows overseas. Because their own cities are too filthy and dirty. Our fault for going after these jokers. It's obvious we don't have a backbone or self confidence.

    Friday, 04 June 2010 04:59 AM

You don't have to worry about that. Your eelam state won't be affected.

    Friday, 04 June 2010 05:00 AM

    Sour grapes?

    Friday, 04 June 2010 03:48 AM

Who care’s bachans, Salman we never forget you man

    Friday, 04 June 2010 05:01 AM

Sam, he is comming only after understanding the situation. Please note that , not only SK, the whole world has understood. the terrorist is no longer here. Good luck.

    Friday, 04 June 2010 05:05 AM

You can see the patriots - dying to see these bollywood stars. As someone said - most of the Sinhalese prefer bollywood films and their stars, to our very own Sinhala films and tele dramas.

    Friday, 04 June 2010 05:06 AM

First, I would like to know the purpose of holding this IIFA in Sri Lanka. Is it going to be of economic benefit to the country? One excuse is that it is good for tourism - but what is the percentage of Indian tourists. Tourism is mostly from the Europeans.

    Friday, 04 June 2010 05:07 AM

We are grateful to all Indiam stars who participate IIFA.

    Friday, 04 June 2010 05:16 AM

    Sour grapes?

    Friday, 04 June 2010 05:17 AM

Well said Salman. Thank you being an example to all the other big names who will miss the event in Colombo

    Friday, 04 June 2010 05:18 AM

Don't be slaves of LTTE. Salman your always welcome to SL..

    Friday, 04 June 2010 05:38 AM

    Thanks machan..........

    Friday, 04 June 2010 05:43 AM

Forget about dirty politics, it's only a cultural show. Enjoy Sri Lanka. By the way did you all bring some saline bottles with you as well?

    Friday, 04 June 2010 06:29 AM

We should ban LTTE supporting South Indian film starts and their movies including Wijey the Sri Lankan born one.
If tamilnadu treat us like this. They should know we have a tit-for-tat option.

    Friday, 04 June 2010 06:39 AM

There's nothing magical about this. Bachchan feared of losing the popularity in South India. But Salman knew he got lot of popularity in Sri Lanka

    Friday, 04 June 2010 06:54 AM

Kugan, show your point to South Indians. Those people dont understand what is entertainment.

    Friday, 04 June 2010 02:32 AM

I can only quote from Mark Twain who elequontly said..

You are a coward when you even seem to have backed down from a thing you openly set out to do.
    - Mark Twain's

    Thursday, 03 June 2010 02:59 PM

I guess if he understood, he wouldn't be here!

    Thursday, 03 June 2010 04:16 PM

Let us ban and/or boycott all South Indian Chamber of Commerce films! In any case, Sri Lankan filmgoers prefer Hindi films.

    Thursday, 03 June 2010 04:57 PM

The only bollywood superstar with a golden heart - a real human being! God bless you Salman, you are a true superstar!

    Thursday, 03 June 2010 05:27 PM

Salman, you are absolutely wrong. You have not understood the point, at all. After all, you are only an actor.

    Thursday, 03 June 2010 05:41 PM

A man with strong 'backbone' and inteligence - Salman sets an example for all ...

    Thursday, 03 June 2010 06:14 PM

Some are heroes only in movies, but you are a real hero! We Sri Lankans appreciate your move. You’re the best out of all the Khans, for most of the Sri Lankans now.

    Thursday, 03 June 2010 08:33 PM

    Friday, 04 June 2010 02:15 AM

Salman is a true actor and brave man.He has a backbone.Sri lankan love you very much.

    Thursday, 03 June 2010 02:25 PM

We really appreciate your's and the other celebrities presence, at this event. This will help Sri Lankans and the Indians to further strengthen their relationship in various other sectors too.

    Friday, 04 June 2010 02:36 AM

Don't give that attitude, everyone knows who they are. no need to pretend and try to show your artificial snobishness. Instead, what you should do is to acknowledge that they have talent for they have come up to that level in a country where there is a huge population fighting to come up there. But don't revere them like demi gods.

    Friday, 04 June 2010 02:41 AM

Dear Salman, Thank you for coming. You just dont know what it means to us as Sri Lankans to have all you wonderul guys here in our little island. It's a big moment for us. Thank you again.

    Friday, 04 June 2010 02:41 AM

Anyway, at the rate Mahinda is making deals with India, Sri Lanka will be a satelite state of India.

    Friday, 04 June 2010 02:54 AM

Salman is an actor with golden heart u proved it again. The fact is that when Tamil Singers from tamil nadu can come n perform in Sri Lanka why can't IIFA??? i just dont understand the logic of these people who are letting their own people come n perform here but make a big fuss when Bollywood stars come.. strange isnt it????

    Friday, 04 June 2010 02:58 AM

We Sri Lankans are very proud of you. Who cares about other nonsence.

    Friday, 04 June 2010 03:04 AM

whats the point ? still sri lanka will loose revenue ... we have to be patient ... we cant simply clash with Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra will be a total mess ....

    Friday, 04 June 2010 03:17 AM

By Sri Lankan Film goers you've only refereed to the Sinhalese in Sri Lanka, The Tamil Speaking community prefers Tamil movies to Hindi Movies. By Banning south Indian Movies, you are only going to deprive the Tamils from watching movies... If you want to ban movies, you should ban movies of SRK, the Bachans, Aish, Katrina Kaif and all the other big Bollywood stars who chose not to be part of IIFA.

    Friday, 04 June 2010 03:18 AM

Thanks a million for all the stars, who are present in SL for iffa, That shows these stars have a back bone, irrespective weather they are freshes or professionals in the film industry.
It was big black mark for you big B, you should have boycott this event at the first place, without even coming down to SL few weeks ago.
KUGAN- pls let us know the point that you are talking about, verymuch intrested in finding out about it.

    Friday, 04 June 2010 03:23 AM

    so what???

    Friday, 04 June 2010 03:34 AM

so the "point" as you say is to never allow the tamil people of Sri Lanka to raise there head by not allowing the country to develop and allowing the tamil people and all other races to live in the third world while the diaspora is allowed to live in luxury? is that the point? so is it the point to politicize and boycott all Sri Lanak events so that the country and the people wont develop? i must say that's one ridiculous "point"...

    Friday, 04 June 2010 03:36 AM

thank you very much salman khan. we love you & you are the best...............

    Friday, 04 June 2010 03:37 AM

Bachchan is a spent force in Indian film industry, who needs him?
