Protest closes Ward place
Part of Ward Place in Colombo has been temporarily closed as a result of a protest by university students underway outside the University Grants Commission (UGC), our reporter at the scene said. Vehicular traffic has now been diverted.

Irrespective of the merits and demerits of the demands, students also have the right to protest (of course without inconveniencing the public) as much as Wimal was allowed to protest (while blocking the road and inconveniencing the public.). No double standards for protests please.

What's wrong with having private universities? I refer to the kind that are legitimate and not just profit-making fly-by-nights for the owners. Many countries have recognized, accredited private universities--they offer competition to the public universities--and competition leads to improvements in both. Besides, there are thousands of Sri Lankan students who are qualified for university but cannot get in for lack of "seats."

Yes,we need the actions of Premadasa's time to cope up with this nonsense. Chase these idiots, tear gas,baton charged. They don't deserved free education. Charge them money for their university entrance.

I cannot agree with you more and looks like a great way to move forward. All these leeches in universities should be made to sing for their supper. Only then will they realize the value of the facilities that they get. Otherwise, they will keep crying for everything like a bunch of spoilt brats.

This is where everything begins. Total selfishness. I think government should totaly stop free education after ALs and should introduce someting like work & learn for government universities too while private universities come to effect.

Let them protest, that is their right, start as many good private educational institutions as possible. Stop free education in Unis. Thousands of people are ready to join. Start specially Medical and nursing colleges. Also paramedics.

Thats very good. Even last week when there was a protest against the UN, all the roads leading to the UN office was closed, and no protester could reach the place.

It is very sad to read most of these comments. Many are very short sighted & have gone on to suggest attacking innocent students. They all are our children. They ask to listen to their concerns with acceptable means rather than resorting to violant acts like terrorism. You would remember few buisinessmen came to the road to protest for their concern over CEPA. They were treated differently. Why? Are these students from another country? Unless we understand the real grievences of youths (who represent millions of ordinary suppressed and deprived people of SL) So please don't see them as terrorist, they have their own genuine problems. Behave as responsible adults.

Whatever the protests they are always at this place obstructing general public. Especially as this is hospital square and one of the foremost important areas where free traffic movement requirement is essential. I believe Premadasa's law should be taken into action. How many times during the past few weeks have we faced tremendous inconveniences because of these university students?

Geronimo, I am confused! Who of these guys will rule the country one day and how?? Who of the current leaders went to the Sri lanka universitry? i don't know why these students can't go to their universities and do their studies and let the policy makers to do their job. Gvt (tax payers) spend a lot of money for free education and they disrupt the tax payers by blocking the roads.

Higher graded university students have no difference with lower graded politicians. All have the same attitudes. As a solution to the inconvenience caused by general public I would like to propose for relocating UGC at Kilinochchi. So that like yesterday cabinet meeting at kili, these people also can go to kili......

The Ministry of Higher Education must be coming under the ministry of high ways... These University guys are just enjoying the life in different ways than the others do.. Don't take it serious. If possible please try to educate them through their parents.

Students have passed their A/L and they think they are the most intelligent in the country. Let's educate them. They are not the most intelligent. They may be the most educated in their generation and they will get even a better education if they continue to study at the university but they don't always look like they are intelligent. If they don't study, they should be kicked out of the university.

The protest is more against the establishment of private universities among other things. Cannot the authorities grind it to these mislead youth that one of the main reasons for such universities is the intermittent closure of universities due to their very own actions. That a course of five years take as long as ten due to such closures? And these are the guys that will rule the country someday!!!!

if there is free education , there should be all the resources to satisfy that free education. without any basic requirement how can they follow free education.

It is now the time for the government to move all government offices out of the busy city. Start from the the offices those frequented by social unrests. Selling the land of those office areas would be enough to build new office complexes out of the city. Most world cities do that. Its time for Colombo as well.
