Prison clash kills one

A clash which broke out between two rival groups at the new magazine prison in Colombo this morning resulted in the death of one prisoner, Commissioner General of Prisons Major General V.R. De Silva told Daily Mirror online.

According to the prisons chief the clash broke out after a remand prisoner attempted to stab a fellow prisoner using a hook from a basket, over a long standing feud between the two parties.

When the clash broke out another inmate had attempted to intervene and settle the dispute only to be stabbed by the prisoner. The victim was admitted to the Colombo National hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, Commissioner General of Prisons Major General V.R. De Silva said.

Major General V.R. De Silva said that security has now been tightened in the prison premises while the Borella police are investigating the incident. (Daily Mirror online)
