Police to amend existing seat belt law

The Police Department is to amend the existing seat belt law to charge spot fines on drivers who fail to wear it instead of sending them to courts.

The move comes after President Mahinda Rajapaksa requested Inspector General of Police (IGP) N.K. Illangakone to bring in an amendment in consultation with the Minister of Transport to charge spot fines instead of sending them to courts. (Supun Dias)

This is just common sense, spot fines for not wearing seat belts. Collections of fines is going to be the problem. Solution to be implemented .

Good move. It is also necessary to ensure that monies collected as fines are duly accounted for through issue of official receipts,etc.

Sri Lanka needs ejector seats NOT seat belts.

Seat belts are death traps as far as Sri Lankan roads are concerned.

We should be able to eject out of the vehicle when we see a giant Ashok Leyland coming head on with blaring horns and blinding headlights.

Who is going to charge the Police Officers who do not wear seat belts even when they drive the Police vehicles. I have seen many Police officers not wearing seat belts. Do they have a separate set of Traffic Rules?
