Parties supporting 13A in coalition talks

The ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Government’s constituent parties, which support the full implementation of the 13th Amendment are currently discussing the ways and means of fielding candidates under a common alliance, the Daily Mirror learns.

Discussions are currently underway among the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), the Citizens Front and other constituent parties to contest the upcoming elections to the provincial council under a common alliance.

The SLMC had said it would contest all provinces on its own. It is reported that discussions had taken place among the Citizens Front led by former UNPer-turned government ally Jaya Sri Ranga and the SLMC.

As of now Government allies -- Minister Vasudewa Nanayakkara, Prabha Ganeshan and C. Radhakrishnan have agreed to contest in certain districts under an alliance named Upcountry National Front. The Daily Mirror learns that this alliance will field candidates for the Nuwara Eliya, Wanni, Kandy and Matale Districts.

However, Minister and New Front Leader Vasudewa Nanayakkaara told Daily Mirror his party would field candidates through the alliance only for the Nuwara Eliya District.

“We will only be with the alliance in the Nuwara Eliya district and for the rest of the districts we will field candidates under the UPFA,” he said.

Minister Nanayakkara however insisted that his party was fielding candidates separately for the Nuwara Eliya district due to differences of opinion between the Ceylon Workers Congress led by Arumugam Thondaman.

However, both Minister Nanayakkara and Prabha Ganeshan were vociferous supporters for the full implementation of the 13th Amendment.

The Kanduarata Janatha Peramuna led by V. Radhakrishnan another UPFA coalition party will also contest the elections under the alliance in the four districts.

“The majority parties will most certainly have a big say and we want to ensure that minority opinion is also heard within these Provincial Councils therefore we have decided to field candidates under this new alliance,” Mr. Radhakrishnan told Daily Mirror. (Hafeel Farisz)
