Over 400 residents to be evicted

Over 400 families living illegally on marshy land in the Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte area are to be evicted and the cabinet has approved a sum of 800 million rupees for this purpose.

The cabinet has approved the money for the resettlement of 450 families living illegally on marshy land in Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, Nawala and other Colombo suburban areas, Chairman of the Sri Lanka land Reclamations and Development Corporation Karunasena Hettiarachi told Daily Mirror online.

He added that although approval has been granted for resettlement, there was a problem of evicting them as land for there resettlement had still not been identified. The eviction is done to conserve the marshy land in the Colombo area, he said. (Daily Mirror online)

What a great opportunity for all PA politicians form Kotte to show their colors in the upcoming general election !! If they do evict people from marshy lands, they will not going to conserve it, definitely those lands will come under some ones name, anybody could see those acres of marshy land bordering Kirimandala mawatha which were sold in 2002 to build a private hospital and an apartment complex.

'Marshlands are lungs of the city to save the city from flood waters and drought'- the slogan only to evict the residents thereafter the slogan will change; the marsh is polluted and spreads all mosquito borne diseases therefore the land should be reclaimed!

Indiscriminate eviction of slum-dwellers is not right. What needs to be done first is identification of land for their resettlement after which they can be resettled with adequate housing provided. Otherwise, where would they go?

The human right to adequate housing is the right of every woman, man, youth and child to acquire and sustain a secure home and community in which to live in peace and dignity. The right to housing is codified as a human right in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

Therefore, identify the resettlement land first and then resettle them with adequate housing.
