The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) seized a stock of medicine valued at Rs. 60 million past the day of expiry from a warehouse at Grandpass in Colombo yesterday, the Internal Trade Ministry said.
“The stock was being prepared to be release to the market when the raid was carried out. The owners had re-packed the expired medicine altering expiry dates.
They have also mixed medicine in good condition with expired ones,” Ministry Spokesman Nipun Ekanayake said.
He said another stock of medicine which would be expired next month had also been seized in the raid.
“We are not definite if the owners were hoping to use the stock when it was expired. However, we seized stock,” he said.
He said the importer of the medicine and the owner of the warehouse would be produced in Court next week. (Sanath Desmond Lahiru Pothmulla)
