The Coast Conservation Department is to clear all the illegal settlements on the Unawatuna coastal belt within the next two weeks.

The department said that these steps have been taken after a prolonged study on the pollution and widespread sand erosion taking place in the Unawatuna coastal strip.

These illegal settlements have a direct impact on these factors. As a counter measure, the authorities have decided to pump sand from the sea bed to resort the coastal belt.

The police are also assisting the Coastal Department to clear the illegal settlements in the coastal belt. (Supun Dias)

Pumping sand from the sea bed is not a very good idea . It will disturb the huge macro environment that lives just below the sea bed . Let nature handle the coast line .
Its a good idea to remove the illegal and unplanned settlements but please see that some of them are absorbed into the management plan as they too are part of the coastal environment .

Tangalle beach has become criminals paradise ..

Tourism is threatened . And tourists are also threatened.

I had been this to this beach few months ago. There are not only illegal structures but also some illegal people collecting high car parking charges from local and foreign tourists. Authorities should pay attention to this too.

Its a Very Good Move and love to see the beach from Kollupitiya to Moratuwa Costal Line Cleaned as well, as illegal settlers and nefarious activities do happen at nights and the Public with the Kids and the Tourist are pested and it is not safe to spend time during the weekends in our beautiful Beach. We should take examples of the beaches in Australia, US and other Countries.
Good Move, save the Beach.

Excellent I dont why they are allowed to squat in the 1st place. I thought after the Tsunami people were removed. Also the Galle Road down South is so ugly with shanties and broken homes lining the road ...Its such a pity we block the beautiful sea view.
