Grade 1 enrolment to be curtailed

The Education Ministry is planning to reduce Grade 1 enrolment in schools from the present capacity of 45 students to 35 per classroom by 2016, a Minister said yesterday.

Education Minister Bandula Gunawardane told the Daily Mirror that there were instances when as many as 50 students had been admitted to Grade 1 classrooms at some leading schools. However, the Minister said the Supreme Court had ruled earlier that the number should be gradually brought down to 35 by 2016.

“We have taken a policy decision to abide by this court ruling. Accordingly, we will bring down the number to 35 by 2016. Next year, we will admit only 40 students for a classroom,” he said.

According to international standards, he said there should be only 30 students in a classroom for better supervision and attention by teachers. (Kelum Bandara)
