UN interfering with Lanka

23 June 2010 09:09 am - 50     - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}

The government has strongly opposed the appointment of the UN Expert Panel by the UN Secretary General in New York yesterday and has called the move as unwarranted and an unnecessary interference with a sovereign nation.

A statement released by the External Affairs Ministry a short while ago said that this interference, moreover, has potential for exploitation by vested interests hostile to the process of reconciliation taking place in Sri Lanka.

“Sri Lanka is a sovereign state with a robustly independent judiciary and a tried and tested system for the administration of justice. The Government of Sri Lanka has consistently promoted and protected human rights. Indeed, this has been explicitly acknowledged by legitimate organs of the United Nations system. The Human Rights Council of the United Nations has formally adopted, after the cessation of the conflict situation, a resolution commending, inter alia, the commitment of Sri Lanka to the promotion and protection of human rights," the statement said.

The statement further said that Sri Lanka was ravaged by the scourge of terrorism for over 30 years and the people of Sri Lanka have, during this period, suffered violence and terror of unimaginable proportions, unleashed on them by the LTTE.

It added that after a long and difficult struggle the Government of Sri Lanka has successfully rid the country of terror, and is in the process of rebuilding the lives of her people.

“As an important part of this process the President of Sri Lanka has appointed a Commission on “Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation” under the Commissions of Inquiry Act, a statutory regime available under Sri Lankan law. The Government is confident that the Commission would make a most significant contribution to the further strengthening of national amity, through a process of restorative justice,” the statement said.

The Government of Sri Lanka notes that the joint statement of the President of Sri Lanka and the Secretary – General issued at the conclusion of the Secretary – General’s visit to the country on 23rd May 2009 makes no reference to “allegations of violations of international humanitarian law committed during military operations between the Government of Sri Lanka and LTTE, the statement said. Yohan Wednesday, 23 June 2010 07:25 PM

If the government's hands are clean, why worry, unduly, about it? This is the same fear that they have of Gen. Fonseka ...

    Sira Thursday, 24 June 2010 04:25 AM

Why should sri lanka corporate?Mind you this is no business of the so called UN which is on the pay list of US and EU.

    Ranz Thursday, 24 June 2010 04:47 AM

We all know the intention of this panel. From the moment we accept any legitimacy of this panel we are bound to abide by the outcomes (prepared according to the agendas of vicious powers). So we need to protest for the illegitimacy of the panel.

    Ruwan Wednesday, 23 June 2010 11:38 AM

Why only ruleing party so much disterbed, why other parties not opose that maens some thing wrong happened in this country. So it should be investigate and expose, if our own people unable to do it.

    suwimal Thursday, 24 June 2010 05:18 AM

Ranjith, except for the last sentence in your reply, your line of argument applies to the government's attitude towards Genral Fonseka. What an irony!!

    Giann Thursday, 24 June 2010 06:14 AM

Mr. Ranjith, I totally agree with you, you are spot on with your comments.

    Sisila Thursday, 24 June 2010 06:27 AM

This what SF did to our country....he ended the war Thank you but he created another war. If not for his stupid comment on white flag UN will not get involved. This shows that a simple words can create more harm than killing terrorist. SF was HERO but not anymore.

    # Ahamed Thursday, 24 June 2010 07:25 AM

    Gabba Wednesday, 23 June 2010 10:43 AM

So y cant UN call on investigations and all other inquiries on recent gazah flotila ship incedent... they are one sided...Well done GOSL..

    sanus Wednesday, 23 June 2010 10:14 AM

Keep it up Sri Lanka!. If we fought the worst terrorist in the world, we should not bow down to diplomatic terrorism!

    Wasantha Wednesday, 23 June 2010 10:17 AM

Why are these people so scared of the UN Panel or whoever appointed?. If we were genuine in our efforts, we would not worry .Let the independent body investigate & give a report. Don't panic. Wait & see what would happen.

    sidath Wednesday, 23 June 2010 10:20 AM

how many bogus court cases GOSL created against SF still struggling to find more faults against him to put in jail
and now GOSL crying foul against UN war crimes investigation

    Cynic Wednesday, 23 June 2010 10:22 AM

Why not sent Mervin to New York to settle this?

Nihal Fernando Wednesday, 23 June 2010 10:23 AM

Because UN is double standard and the panel is already prejudiced.

Punchi Putha Wednesday, 23 June 2010 10:25 AM

    my left foot!

    Roshan Wednesday, 23 June 2010 10:25 AM

If there are no Human Right violation or War crime then why the Government should worry about the UN panel?

    nmn Wednesday, 23 June 2010 10:33 AM

what a joke this UN. They don't have a back bone to investigate or punish the israelis for what they did n doing to palestine people...but they have the guts to appoint a team investigate on srilankas internal matters...because we are 3rd world country...and isreal has backing up of USA..isnt it...shame on UN n BANKI MOOON...

    sjayawardene Wednesday, 23 June 2010 10:34 AM

We were genuine all the time. International figures helped the terrorists to kill our children. Now they come out with panels. All for them to make a living

    Kaduru Wednesday, 23 June 2010 10:40 AM

Why investigate last days of a war that had trade mark terrorism for 30 long years?
Isn't this a start of a conspiracy against Sri Lanka?

    Akilan Wednesday, 23 June 2010 10:42 AM

The way, how the Sri Lankan Government is responding to such panel, is already giving us a clue that something is not right here. If there were no war crimes, if there were zero caualities why should we fear. Some say 7000 died, some say 40000 died, some are even saying 75000 died. Why can't the government corporate with the UN and bring and end to these speculations.

    rohan Wednesday, 23 June 2010 10:42 AM

These panel would definitely be bribed by LTTE supporters to get a bias report to support them. Good chance for the panel to become millioners.

    wicky Wednesday, 23 June 2010 10:12 AM

What a joke. How can we protest about a panel appointed outside our country. The only thing we can do is to refuse cooperation with this committee. But I am sure it will make things worst for us. Instead of being stupid and arrogant, we can find diplomatic ways of facing this situation if we improve on our policies in the right directions. That is what we should do.

    Gen Wednesday, 23 June 2010 10:48 AM

    Upendra Wednesday, 23 June 2010 10:53 AM

"Independant judiciary" canot belevie his commentment bcoz "Independant judiciary" only for some ppl. Why not about LTTE leadres so better let the independent investigate for better tomorrow.

Ossan Salam - Qatar Wednesday, 23 June 2010 11:01 AM

Let the UN panel in Israel to finalize it's investigations first and the world would see whether Israel will be punished for it's crimes over Palestenians. Unfortunately the UN wants to investigate and punish Sri Lanka for the commiments to eradicate terrorism.

    Ranjith Wednesday, 23 June 2010 11:05 AM

wasantha, it is not as simple as that Just because you are genuine or not guilty, you should not assume that those who are planning to gun you will not find ways of making you guilty. The world is much more complex as you should know from all machinations that have been going on for the past thirty years. Now whether you are guilty or innocent, the LTTE backed UN has one objective. To make Sri Lanka guilty so they take revenge from you for defeating the LTTE.
By the way, There is no such thing called 'independant body'. It is a myth.

    nizar Wednesday, 23 June 2010 11:05 AM

Because the UN already failed to appoint the experts, why they failed in Iraq, Afganistan, Palestine Israel to do so. UN is an NGO run by America that's it.

jamis aiya Wednesday, 23 June 2010 11:12 AM

Tamil terrorism is over and what we have now is Sinhala Terrorism. UN has just kept quiet. How can you rely on the committe appointed by MR to be genuine as he is yet to give the 2500 salary hike which he publicly announced. Could this man be trusted for a single cent for that matter.

jamis aiya Wednesday, 23 June 2010 11:13 AM

You have forgotten that the State Terrorism is yet to be won by the Sri Lankans

    Karthik Wednesday, 23 June 2010 11:19 AM

UN interfering with Lanka…. Whats wrong in that? UN can interfere in any country matter in this planet when they cross the limit. That’s the only duty of UN

    bash Wednesday, 23 June 2010 11:21 AM

Why not investigate USA for the Iraqi war on the pretext of WMD which was never found...

POL MAMA Wednesday, 23 June 2010 11:28 AM

    RajasH Wednesday, 23 June 2010 11:32 AM

This UN panel is only an eye wash to keep the IC happy. Sri Lanka protesting is part of the plot.
