FR petition against electricity tariff hike

A Fundamental Rights petition was filed in the Supreme Court today challenging the proposed electricity tariff hike.

Lawyers for Human Rights and Development, a civic rights organisation filed this action complaining that the proposed rates are unreasonable, unfair and unjust and asked the Supreme Court to rectify it.

Human Rights lawyer Kalyananda Thiranagama who filed the action on behalf of the organization said the proposed tariff rates affected the majority poor and middle class people unfairly.

The application sought an order to stay the approval given by Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka to introduce new electricity tariff rates.
