Four school boys in hospital after rugby match assault

Four students were admitted to the Kandy General hospital following a clash in an inter-school rugby match between two leading Kandy schools this afternoon at Bogambara grounds, hospital sources said.

Two students from Kingswood College and two students from St. Anthony’s College were admitted. A scuffle broke out in the second half of the game, when a player who lay on the ground was kicked by the opponents’ players on the bench, and the match was subsequently called off.

The Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Union had also said an inquiry would be conducted into the incident.

This is yet another instance of violence at school rugby matches, with several controversies preceding today’s match, including assaults on referees which had brought a temporary halt in the schools rugby league season last week.
