Detainee jumps to death

A detainee who jumped off the upper storey of the Trincomalee Prisons has died on admission to the hospital, Trincomalee Harbour Police said. The victim was identified as Karunaratne (62) a resident of Siyambalape in Dikwela. The detainee had been suffering from a mental illness according to Prison reports. (Sa D)

Even he was suffering from mental ilness, this is not a direct suicide attempt. If he wanted, he had the opportunity to die in the prison without jumping over the wall.We have to accept the fact that mental ilness prepared his mind set to escape but it put the life in danger.

No proper treatment for mental disorders in Sri Lanka compared to the West. Schizophrenia , Uncontrollable Anger, Irrational behavior, mood swings,Depression are more common than reported. In Sri Lanka If you go to a counselor or a Psychiatrist ,you are branded as a nut case or a lunatic. In the west its completely different. Every day You move around with a lot of "nut cases" here. No body is 100% mentally perfect
I guess.

Treatment centres for mental illnesses should be set up at district level or more accessible. Going to Angoda has a stigma
attached and its a point of no return or one way trip, the attitude of some people.
Every hospital must have a Psychiatrist and counselors.

Every police station also must have a qualified Psychiatrist and counselors since everyone is innocent till they are proven guilty.
