Charges galore against politicos

As many as 104 local government members and provincial councillors elected from time to time since 2004 face allegations of corruption, crime and other unlawful activities, Parliament was informed today.

The Local Government and Provincial Councils Ministry revealed these details in Parliament in answer to a question asked by United National Party (UNP) MP Ranjan Ramanayake.

Deputy Minister Indika Bandaranayake presented the list of the names with their designation at the respective local authorities and the provincial councils. The majority are from the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) while some of them are members representing the United National Party (UNP) and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP).

Among those accused of such allegations, are 12 heads of the local authorities -- 11 controlled by the UPFA and one by the UNP.  One provincial councillor facing such charges is UNPer Royce Fernando.

The Deputy Minister said action had been initiated against them under the normal law of the country. (Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)
