Buses on the Karagampitiya-Hettiawatta (176), Battaramulla-Dehiwela (163), Mount Lavinia-Mattakuliya (155) Angulana-Kiribathgoda (154) may go on strike today to join the massive strike by the bus workers operating on the Galle road which has been continuing since yesterday.

Yesterday, all private buses operating from Panadura and Moratuwa went on strike and refused to go back to work after a bus driver and a conductor of a private bus was allegedly assaulted by a group of over 20 people in front of the Ratmalana depot on Wednesday.

Private Bus Drivers and Conductors Union, Spokesperson, Sugath Ratnayake stated that bus operators will continue their strike until the individuals responsible for the assault were brought to book. Thousands of commuters from Panadura to Colombo and several other areas have been stranded due to the lack of buses on the roads.

The driver of the private bus who was severely injured in the assault was transferred to the Panadura hospital from the Kalubowila hospital.

Meanwhile Western Province Transport Minister, Upali Kodikara met with the private bus workers today to settle the strike. However they refused to stop the strike stating that the two security guards at the Ratmalana bus depot who had been arrested by the Mount Lavinia police have been released. Im a daily traveler of 163 and I think this bus should be toughly regulated. People often get late to work as they purposely overcrowd and delay journeys to make more money. Hope the government takes action against 163 and other buses if they are doing the same.

Come on Transport Minister, get the SLTB in action so we can kick this pvt bus cancer out of oiur society. they always use the commuter as a ransom to fill their ever bulging pockets.

Private Buses is another cancer that brought back into the country by JR who never considered the well being of the general public of this country.

They don't care any law. Don't issue tickets. Don't give balance money specially coins. Stop out of halting places if any one to pick up and don't stop at the halting place if another bus is at the halt.

They don't allow increase the CTB buses which are still liked by the commuters.

Not any government taking proper action against them I think due to some of their people also running private buses.

Why should these problems come to the streets when there are ministers, departments and official and so on monthly paid by public money to handle the same?

    kamkaruwa Friday, 03 June 2011 11:31 AM

very nice now how will the people go back home specially the pregnant ladies and the old people. what is the stupid administration doing? going home in the prado and suv`s is it?

    Xavier Friday, 03 June 2011 09:53 AM

Away with this private buses.. Govt. should introduce more state owned bus services at least at this juncture. The private bus owners demands are totally unacceptable here. In the first instance, why did that private bus driver break a CTB bus mirror? I guess it must have been while wrongly overtaking it! And that happened in front of the Ratmalana bus depot! And do they think they can get away with that? And what justify them to put commuters into difficulties like this? This is very serious matter and govt. should take stringent measures to put an end to such atrocious activities. Cancel their licence is what I would recommend.

    Xavier Friday, 03 June 2011 10:02 AM

Transport minister should divert some of the SLTB buses plying in other routes to these striking routes and reduce the problems of the commuters. This will also teach these capricious private bus strikers a lesson.

    Bumba Friday, 03 June 2011 09:59 AM

Come of the learned Minister. As you had bragged bring out your gleaming fleet of buses and show the public that you can run the public transport system with the private buses. I am waiting to see this great fleet the minister hiding.
