BASL concerned over new SC appointments

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) while expressing concern over the impending appointments to fill Supreme Court vacancies will send a top-priority letter instructing regional branches of the Bar Association to send an immediate response on the intended appointments to the Supreme Court.

Sources told Daily Mirror the Bar Association would take the views expressed by the regional bar association on the impending judicial appointments which it alleges had been made without following proper procedures or laid down criteria.

The Daily Mirror learns that Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Jayawardena is to be appointed a judge of the Supreme Court.

“Even the political appointments made during successive governments so far have been of men with integrity. But unfortunately the appointments that are to be made have little or no basis,” the source said.

The Supreme Court has three vacancies to be filled with the most recent being that resulting from the retirement of Justice Shiranee Thilakawardena. (Susitha R. Fernando)
