Two suspects were arrested by Police Walana Crime Division while pasting new labels on expired pharmaceutical drugs packets at Narahenpita today, Police said.

Three directors of the company were also taken into custody.

The raid was conducted with the officials from the Health Ministry Medical Technology and Supplies Division and the Walana Crime Division at a private pharmaceutical importing company.

Police recovered 4,818 boxes of Hydrazone Ointment drug with altered expiry dates and 10,000 cartons to be used to pack the tubes.

Police said that investigations were being conducted and relevant legal action would be taken against the arrested.

Police also advised the general public and the pharmacies to be cautious when purchasing medicines at pharmacies. (Chaturanga Pradeep - DM Online)

This is a serious crime - it amounts to even killing patients and they should not be granted bail and even deserves death sentence. Lets wish there is no politicos involved and that it will fizzle out like the Tangalle rape case

I think the right thing to do here is to cancel license to import and sell medicines of this company. Mere punishment of some workers or officials will not save poor patients. People are already suffering from strikes of health workers. I could not believe dragging issue between doctors and nurses regarding a room in Kandy hospital? Those nurses should have been kicked out for trying to disgrace the doctors.
