The Colombo Chief Magistrate ordered the army to provide protection to General Sarath Fonseka after placing him under their custody on a collective request made by both counsels who appeared for the State and for Fonseka following a hearing today.

The State counsel making submissions in Court today said that General Fonseka had made defamatory statements regarding the government both locally and internationally and had also attempted to create communal disharmony through some of his statements.

The Counsel said that they will be filing an indictment over the charges. The counsel appearing for Fonseka said that they will respond once the indictment is filed.

Both parties later requested the Court to remand the General with the army instead of the prison as his life is in danger. The Court agreed to the request and ordered the army to ensure the General is given adequate protection.

Lets hope SF gets a pardon as well from MR before the victory day celebrations. Pity that a solder who was instrumental in the demise of the ltte is treated in such manner. In the name of reconciliation and nation building it would be great. Imagine the mileage and the propaganda MR&co will get if they go ahead and do pardon him.
