Youth used during Aragalaya, leaders became “kings” – Namal

Colombo, February 14 (Daily Mirror) - National Organizer and MP of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, Namal Rajapaksa said that some people who encouraged public protests later gained power, while a group of young people who joined the Aragalaya lost their lives.

He made these remarks while speaking to the media at the headquarters of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) on Nelum Mawatha.

Rajapaksa alleged that certain groups used young people to achieve political goals. He claimed that those who gave advice, appeared in the media, and promised to protect the youth are now enjoying power, while the young people who took part in the struggle “went to the gallows.”

He further accused the government of using repression to survive when it fails to deliver promises to the public. He also spoke about issues related to the rice trade, claiming that the so-called “rice mafia” is now linked to rice importers rather than local farmers.

Rajapaksa said his party will continue to stand for the rights of the people and speak on their behalf.

Referring to a recent court ruling over the killing of MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala, he said the judiciary had acted independently and delivered justice. However, he expressed concern that some people on social media were still trying to justify the killing, which he described as a brutal act done in public.

He also called for an investigation into alleged foreign funding linked to the protest movement, claiming that money had been received from overseas sources.
