Workers assaulted for attempting to disconnect power supply



One of the two workers who went to disconnect the electricity supply in a house in the Jayaganga area of Talawa was assaulted today by the owner, the Thalawa Police said.

They said a police complaint was received over the assault.

The two workers were from a private contracting company of the Kekirawa Electricity Board.

A video relating to the incident was circulated on social media. In it, the worker was assaulted with a piece of wood taken out of the dog kennel.

The woman in the video had told the workers that they would settle the bill by today, soon after their salaries were received. But the workers said that they were appointed on that duty to disconnect the power supply.

The man and the woman warned the workers not to disconnect the supply. The man threatened the workers and told them to go away if they were not ready to face the consequences.

The man had taken a piece of wood and hit one worker, threatening them to go away. The attacked the mobile phone of the other worker, who was videoing the scene.

Since the piece of wood was broken during the attack, the man had brought a shovel from the house to attack the workers again. The workers left the place and filed a complaint with the Talawa Police. The victim was admitted to the Talawa Hospital for treatment.

Later, the woman was admitted to the Talawa Hospital for treatment, claiming that the workers had assaulted her.

The person who  attacked the workers has been arrested by the Talawa Police and they are conducting further investigations in this regard. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
