Wildlife Department plans urgent action to cut deaths from elephant-human conflict by 20%

Colombo, April 3 (Daily Mirror) - The Wildlife Conservation Department aims to implement an urgent action plan to reduce deaths from elephant-human conflicts in the country by 20% before the end of this year.

As part of this initiative, an action plan has been prepared to mitigate the ongoing human-elephant conflict in the Anuradhapura Wildlife Zone.

A discussion was held among Environment Minister Dhammika Patabendi, Deputy Minister Anton Jayakody and wildlife officials to explore necessary solutions and measures to address the human-elephant conflict in the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa wildlife zones.

The Minister and his team met with wildlife officers from the Anuradhapura Wildlife Zone at the Ritigala Wildlife Research and Training Center. During the discussion, it was decided to establish three Elephant Management Units in Thirappane, Mahakanadara and Medawachchiya—areas identified as high-risk zones for human-elephant conflict.

The Minister instructed officials to take immediate action to develop 10 Anuradhapura Kulu tanks and prepare the surrounding fields to ensure an adequate water supply. Additionally, plans were made to cultivate 20 hectares of grassland to provide sufficient food for the elephants.

It was also decided to complete the construction of 29.6 kms of electric fencing around Sigiriya.

Furthermore, attention was given to establishing 100 regional youth committees under the supervision of the Wildlife Conservation Department to help mitigate human-elephant conflict and support wildlife conservation efforts.
