Wild elephant rescued from Digampatha garbage dump in Dambulla



Colombo, Jan. 30 (Daily Mirror) - A wild elephant that had fallen into the Digampatha garbage dump in the Dambulla Divisional Secretariat was safely rescued following a prompt operation by wildlife officials, the Wildlife Department said.

According to information received at dawn yesterday (29), the elephant had become trapped in thick mud at the dumping site. Officers attached to the Sigiriya Wildlife Office immediately rushed to the location and initiated rescue operations.

With the assistance of a backhoe, wildlife officers managed to safely retrieve the elephant by yesterday evening. Following the successful rescue, steps were taken to repatriate the animal to its natural reserve.

The rescue operation was carried out by wildlife officers of the Sigiriya Site Protection Office, highlighting the swift response of authorities to protect wildlife in distress.
