KARACHI (Cricket Pakistan) - A High Court in Bangladesh has issued a ruling against the former Pakistan cricketer Waqar Younis.

This ruling came in response to critical remarks made by Waqar about Bangladesh cricket and their team captain, Shakib Al Hasan, during their recent World Cup match against Sri Lanka.

In that match, Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews was controversially given a "timed out" dismissal, marking the first instance of this type of dismissal in the 146-year history of international cricket.

During the match, Shakib decided to appeal for a "timed-out" dismissal of Mathews. While the ICC regulations do include a provision for "timed out" dismissals, it had not been implemented in international cricket before this incident. Mathews requested a new helmet, and the process took more than two minutes to complete. Shakib, noticing the delay, informed the umpire, leading to Mathews being declared "timed out."

Both Waqar and former Sri Lankan cricketer Russel Arnold criticized Shakib's actions in the commentary box, characterizing the appeal as "unsportsmanlike behavior." Younis specifically directed his criticism towards Shakib, questioning his actions and expressing disapproval of Bangladesh's approach, citing that it went against the spirit of cricket.

“I didn’t enjoy what I saw out there. That wasn’t good for the spirit of cricket. I am old school and I think that was a lot of drama to get Angelo Mathews out,” Waqar said during TV broadcast.

The ruling against Waqar instructed the Bangladesh Cricket Board to explain why they should not lodge a complaint with the International Cricket Council (ICC) to have Waqar removed from the list of international commentators in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023.

Furthermore, the court has given the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and its president a period of 10 days to provide a response to this ruling. The ruling was issued by a bench comprising Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md Atabullah after the initial hearing of a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Waliur Rahman Khan.

This is an unfair decision. As many exponents of the game have spoken against it as being “not in the spirit of the game”. Senior experienced players like Waqar should be commended for saying so. What’s the point of being a commentator if you cannot comment? We should start a petition against vilifying those who stand up against such unfair rules and support them for their actions. Can someone capable start such a petition we who support it can sign up.

    Agreed

BCB should be held responsible for this behaviour of their captain. Didnt they let him go scot-free, sometime back, when he pulled off the team from the field in a match due to a no ball decision which was not in favour. He went further showing his anger by kicking the dressing room door. Aren't sportsmen the goodwill ambassadors of their country?

Bangladesh is making themselves subject of of laughing stock in front of world ,media and cricketing fraternity. Its not only Waqar Younes who is criticizing but the entire media all over the world has not approved of this action.

    Jude Wednesday, 08 November 2023 09:16 PM

    Hehehehehehehe!!

Tissa Fernando Wednesday, 08 November 2023 09:22 PM

Shameless Sakib. Waqqar has been a straight forward cricketer all the time.

    Maqs Wednesday, 08 November 2023 10:46 PM

Who cares those foolish decisions.. Come on Waqar, we are with you... You are a great and gentleman cricketer. Ask those Bangalis to go an fly a kite. Hey Bangalis, you'll have showed many a time that most of your players are a disgrace to the great game of cricket. Plz don't aggravate it further.

    Swaminathan Thursday, 09 November 2023 08:19 AM

It is one thing to do such a wrong thing but worst to justify it.Shakib must be boycotted in every cricket playing nation.a gentleman player like Mathews subjected to this is tragic and creates an impression that cricket is no more a game of gentlemen

    Well said.Bravo Suhair Lebbe.

Come on Bangladesh cricket and Shaqib , by the way you were one of my favourite but you need to grow up. Sportsman spirit at least save your face after loosing you could win the hearts... Sorry you need to be mature...

Having a helmet on whilst batting is a safety feature and a need of the batter though not a requirement. Whilst opposition has the right (not moral right) to appeal, the umpires should have considered the safety aspects of the batter to decline the appeal as safety of a player is paramount, takes priority over anything else in the playing field. It looks like none of the umpires did consider safety aspects of Mathews thereby making a blunder!

Where is the support from the country and the Board for the SL cricket team and Matthews on this incident.Nothing. If this happened to any other team it would have been different. They were representing their country not playing IPL.Very disappointing. No wonder SL is singled out for incidents like this. No patriotism and too much infighting in the country for anything constructive to happen.Only outsiders are speaking out and Russel Arnold a lone voice

Cricket lower Thursday, 09 November 2023 01:22 PM

Well, SLC is too busy fighting for the seat. Ideally, we dont have an SLC committee in place, so there is not one to fight for Mathews as the goons are fighting to fill their pockets :P

    Ram Thursday, 09 November 2023 03:36 AM

The order is out of context. The Commentators are entitled to their opinions and no one can stop. If they utter filth or defame a player that could be a ground for removal. Words "Unsportsmanlike behaviour" is often said from the commentator's box

Has everyone forgotten how this same Bangladshi damaged Premadasa Stadium glass door during a match there?

    B P Thursday, 09 November 2023 04:57 AM

Bangladeshi cricketers reportedly damaged property at R. Premadasa Stadium 17 Mar, 2018 | 9:51 am COLOMBO (News 1st) – It was reported that the Bangladeshi cricketers have destroyed property inside restrooms at R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, after an argument during the T20 match against Sri Lanka.

    Rohan Thursday, 09 November 2023 05:16 AM

how come Russel Arnold escapes if he too has criticized on the time out decision

    Cherath Thursday, 09 November 2023 05:23 AM

Shakib, I doubt, would be behaving to the letter of the law, if the batsman happened to be Indian. Simple truth is Shakib saw an easy way to rid Mathews, without having to deliver a ball. Waqar and others were on the side of fair play and common sense.

    Terrence K Thursday, 09 November 2023 07:00 AM

Why go to Bangladesh when the match was held in India ? This shows what spineless players who have achieved to be in the game of cricket to be a part of the semi finals by hook or by crook !Don't worry Waqar you have spoken a mouthful the public who truly value the spirit of the game as a GENTLEMANS GAME will support you

    wsw Thursday, 09 November 2023 07:09 AM

Clowns, only justifying their 'laughing stock' status.

Teepu Malik Thursday, 09 November 2023 08:13 AM

How could anyone enjoy winning like this? It's like Shakib used a loophole in ICC rule book.

Premalal Perera Thursday, 09 November 2023 08:19 AM

There is no point in protesting against a rule which the rule makers thought was just and reasonable. So as long as there are rules someone is bound to use them. So if the incident is so reprehensible why not change the rule?

Mohamed Adham Thursday, 09 November 2023 08:45 AM

The previous track record of Shakib would be self explanatory itself. Bangladeshi Cricket Board should keep its silence.

    Ron Thursday, 09 November 2023 09:11 AM

Waqar was great player and a legend he have all the right to comment on his view the days he played majority players played gentleman's cricket had great respect for the game and for the other team due to class of those good old players cricket today been played only to win buger the rest attitude.....keep up the good work waqar

    RR Thursday, 09 November 2023 09:13 AM

SHAKIB SHOULD BE GIVEN A LESSON OR TWO, ON "SPIRIT OF THE GAME" SHAKIB HAS LOST HIS HEAD

    Dakuneyaka Thursday, 09 November 2023 09:39 AM

Why does not the supreme Court of Bangladesh issue sucha decree against Shakib al Hassan for kicking down the stumps on an unfavourable decision by a BD Domestic umpire or for smashing down a glass door at the RPS in SL for being given out ? Shows what Bangladesh is !

    Bandu Thursday, 09 November 2023 09:53 AM

This is what can happen with our On Line Safety Bill in its present form. Anything can be interpreted to the benefit of interested parties - Damn Fairmindedness and Liberty of an individual to express oneself.

    Mohommed Thursday, 09 November 2023 10:22 AM

Waqar and Pakistani coaches developed Afghanistan cricket and they are performing much better than Bangladesh. Shakib has to practice some better sportsmanship for the good of the spectators and future Bengali cricket.

Formal Srilankan Thursday, 09 November 2023 10:29 AM

If the rule is there really that must be applied whith out bias. You think its like, traffic rules in some counties. That the rule is there but it's not prrcticed. Do you want to change the rule with public debate with out proper manner like in Srilanka

Gerald mendis Thursday, 09 November 2023 12:00 PM

What do the Bangla high court expect from the commentators? Sugar coated comments for every action ? Not the 1st time Shakib has braught shame to this game with his behaviour. What action will they take against the great Allen Donald their bowling coach for condemning this man? High time he is sent to a rehabilitating center for setting a poor standard for their young crickters center

    Jef Thursday, 09 November 2023 02:10 PM

Good old days players walked out when new it was out today even with digital review they kind of refused to walk out cricket must be thought well like the good old days its the players that create problems..not the rules umpares officials must be given to overturn some decision case by case not the players whithing acceptable timely manner it only create issues if otherwise..

    Seqi Thursday, 09 November 2023 05:15 PM

The Bangladesh High Court has shown itself to be an absurdity. No wonder the kids in the cricket team have a morality problem when their elders show themselves to be obtuse in legal judgements.

    DOT Thursday, 09 November 2023 07:14 PM

Are you crazy Waqar? We do not give dame about it.

    udaya Saturday, 11 November 2023 09:39 AM

first its the bangladesh cricket team that is the laughing stock of the world. now its their judicial system!!!

mohamed shifan Sunday, 12 November 2023 06:52 AM

we have the bangladeshi team is doing whatever is in the cricket ruling book at their disposal to win the games (be it unsportman line or smart), on the other hand we have sri lankan team who doesn't care if they win or lose and a pretty lethargic team
