Colombo, Nov. 7 (Daily Mirror) - Vehicles to be provided on the basis of return after the end of the parliamentary members’ term will be among the new purchases planned by the government to upgrade its outdated fleet of vehicles and machinery.

Presenting the 2026 Budget in Parliament, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said the government’s current fleet is inadequate and that a large portion of the vehicles and machinery are obsolete, resulting in heavy expenditure on repairs and maintenance.

He said this situation has become a major obstacle to the continuation of key development activities expected to be carried out by the government.

To address this issue, the government has decided to procure essential vehicles and machinery for government institutions, along with vehicles for Members of Parliament that must be returned to the state at the end of their parliamentary term.

For this purpose, *Rs. 12,500 million* has been proposed as the initial allocation.

President Dissanayake said the move is aimed at improving efficiency in public service operations while ensuring responsible use of state resources.

The permit system actually made more sense, as now the government will have to bear the costs of repairs, insurance, and so on. By the end of their term, they’ll probably be given the option to purchase the vehicles at the government valuer’s estimated price. Unfortunately, most people won’t realise that giving a permit was actually the better option for the government, rather than purchasing the vehicles for the parliamentarians.

This way is better as they are duty free for govt imports, and vehicle still with govt after five years. But giving permits duty free means that the MPs sell the permit for millions and they pocket the money and no vehicle for govt at all at the end. It was a racket to give the MPs a bribe.

Government should maintain a vehicle pool Anyone who wants a vehicles should sign one out for the duration and return it afterward. There should be a standard vehicle like a double cab or inexpensive SUV that everyone is eligible for. No expensive vehicles like Range Rovers, Lexus, Mercedes, BMW etc. Permit system became a money-making enterprise for government stooges who abused the system and sold them for profit.

I don't think that government has any plans to improve exports. Could someone tell me whether there is any money allocated for export oriented industries.

Please make sure that they dont change the most valuable parts of the vehicle with old parts if they have to return. Some are so corrupt you never know whether they do it or not.

Most developed world Members of parliament need to book a Vehicle from the government fleet to be used on official duties except the head of the government . Only the PM as been allocated a Vehicle with a security escort for official use . When purchase new vehicles could be allocate all new vehicles to the government fleet and arrange Members of Parliament to book vehicles for their official use the same way that practise in the developed world . This way could save lots of tax payers money that could be used for welfare of citizens of Sri Lanka .
