The Society of Government Pharmacists has raised serious concerns over unqualified individuals dispensing medicines, including antibiotics, at private pharmacies across the country.
Speaking at a media briefing, Society Chairman Ajith Thilakaratne said that some private pharmacies are issuing medicines without prescriptions, in violation of health regulations.
He also urged the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) to rigorously verify the qualifications of pharmacy staff to ensure public safety and compliance with the law.
“When a patient says they have a cold or cough, antibiotics are freely given. The Health Ministry has issued clear guidelines for doctors on prescribing antibiotics, and it is a serious issue when an unqualified person at a pharmacy provides them to the public,” he warned.
He further cautioned that many pharmacies operate purely for commercial gain without following proper storage and dispensing procedures.
“Private pharmacies are required to display the photographs and licences of registered pharmacists. A pharmacy cannot legally function without a licenced pharmacist on duty,” Thilakaratne stressed.
