Colombo, Feb 07 (Daily Mirror) - An island-wide police operation targeting individuals who commit acts of abuse against children and women in public transport has been initiated.

The Public Security Ministry said the operation's primary objective is to combat sexual abuse within public transport services, addressing the increasing number of complaints received by police stations on a daily basis.

Acting Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon has directed the implementation of this operation.

The IGP instructed the police to prioritize operations between 08:00-10:00 and 17:00-19:00, emphasizing peak hours of public transport usage.

Accordingly, police officers in civilian clothes will travel in buses, with special attention being paid to streets, bus stops and railway stations.

Police said arrangements have been made to deploy groups of police officers in uniforms, especially covering the main roads, ready to provide assistance to the officers travelling in civilian clothes when they need assistance.

Who is going to check on the undercover police who are likely to do the same?

Must do something against those who are trying to behave like they are in a honeymoon suit in the public transport. Tell them to respect the other commuters.

Abuse comes in all forms Wednesday, 07 February 2024 04:15 PM

Good move! also hope they take action against the bus conductor who moves through the crowded bus over and over rubbing against female passengers collecting fare without issuing a ticket. and the loading and off loading of passengers between bus stops and also the abusive manner in which they talk to passengers.

well done Mr. IGP, finally someone is reaching out and giving some protection to the innocent victims. I hope the cops will not take undue advantage of this situation

Our Police work like menstrual cycle. Every month they announce some bullshit, do it for 3 to 5 days and then forget about it. These are activities that Police should be doing regularly and not announcing and doing. It just shows the acute incompetency and abject uselessness of this entity.

THESE ISSUES SHOULD HAVE BEEN DEALT WITH DECADES AGO, NOT PRIOR TO AN ELECTION. Wednesday, 07 February 2024 06:15 PM

Exactly, others too have made pre-election announcements, the 3-5 days can even stretch to 7 days. Conductors rubbing on children and commuters not getting tickets has been going on for well over 50 years, so no surprise.

A good move! Jack checkers !

Conductor is the problem Wednesday, 07 February 2024 07:11 PM

Even foreign tourists ask why tickets are not issued in private buses. Passengers should be given a ticket when they get into the bus. The conductor should not walk up and down in the crowded bus rubbing himself against women.

Does anyone think that this is practical to implement? Now it has become customary for the authorities to come up with unpractical novel ideas to catch the media lime light. Let us see. Still its better to allocate either right or left hand side seats to females and children to occupy.

In order to stop these sick people from abusing innocent people, you need to have a mechanism for them to satisfy their needs. Perhaps, JVP idea of making softer laws on prostitution is not bad.

Golden chance for all police in civil dress who are going to keep an eye on the abuseres of women and children in buses as they can fulfill their own dreams of rubbing and abusing as seen in online japanese p movies.

Before implementing such a operation the government must first ensure that all buses should only have a few standing passengers whilst the others should be provided with seating accommodation. Now take for example trains which are loaded like cattle it could be observed that due to lack of space males are leaning on females and vice versa. To ensure abuse does not take place the govt. should ensure that the necessary facilities are adequate otherwise it will not be fair for the males/females. Meanwhile it has been a known fact that the many Police personnel cannot be exempted because they violate the laws more than civilians.
