Udayanga says he was released

Former Sri Lankan ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga, who was detained in the UAE, today said he was released by the Interpol.

In a Facebook post, he said the Interpol of the UAE detained him and questioned on February 4 while he was on his way to the US.

"However, after realizing that no charge had been levelled against me at the international level and due to the lack of a red notice of the Interpol, I was released," he said.

He said he has no intention to return to Sri Lanka at this moment because of the alleged political witch hunt of the government.

He said all charges levelled against him were false.

Meanwhile, when contacted, Police Media Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said the special investigation team, which was sent to the UAE to hold discussions with authorities there over the possibility of extraditing the former envoy to Sri Lanka, was yet to report back to the police.

“We can't make a comment over the Facebook post made by Mr. Weeratunga as of yet,” he said.

Mr Yahapaalanaya, where is your so-called western world friends? After ruining the island for three years, your President and your PM voice and claim that "......our relations with the world is super". Is this an example of your capability on that front too? You should be ashamed of fooling us ONCE on Jan 08, 2015. But we should be ashamed if you fool us TWICE. Don't have a dream., we are NOT.

    Jaliya Thursday, 08 February 2018 07:08 PM

The press nor the public knows the real story behind the MIG deal and other illicit deals of MR regime ... to make matters more complicated we have .............. also engaged in such illicit deals. When the interpol arrests a suspect he will be turned back to his origin (not SLK but where the origin destination of boarding) Due to lack of international cooperation corruption within the country and "we knows it all" attitude of Sri Lankan politician Police FCID etc... it would be NOT possible to expose these individuals. Knowing all these issues in advance we have sent a group to UAE on a holiday at the taxpayer expense.

    Ruban Thursday, 08 February 2018 07:29 PM

I agree with Udayanga Weeratunga; it is difficult to expect justice from the current regime; their own thieves (e.g. Bond Scam) are free to do anything in the country. They frame bogus charges and even before an accused is tried, the state owned TV channels and certain private channels brand them thieves. This is not right and anyone with right mind may think twice before planning to land in Sri Lanka.

    Bakaladasa Thursday, 08 February 2018 11:39 PM

It is shame that nothing this government had achieved since coming to power. This looks like the last nail in Coffin. Remember how previous government got one of the LTTE strongman arrested in Malaysia and brought him down to Colombo.

    Ajith Friday, 09 February 2018 02:59 PM

Confiscate his assets in Sri Lanka. That will teach him lesson.
