Kandy, Feb 02 (Daily Mirror) - Two suspects were arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 25-year-old American woman visiting Sri Lanka.
The suspects had also reportedly stolen gold jewelry worth approximately USD 6,000 from the woman.
The Crimes Investigation Division of the Kandy Police arrested the suspects, including a tourist guide.
The incident was reported to the Nanu Oya Police, with the victim alleging that she was sexually abused at a guest house in Kandy on January 29.
According to her complaint, she had consumed liquor with the suspects that night and she alleged that she was drugged and made unconscious.
Upon regaining consciousness, she found herself naked on a bed.
The victim also complained that a gold bracelet worth USD 2,400, a necklace worth USD 3,600 and a pair of diamond-studded earrings were stolen.
The suspects were arrested following investigations.

I'm also a foreigner in Kandy for nearly 20yrs, (as resident) she should've studied the cultural difference here in SL especially Kandy, though it was indeed unfortunate if tourist guide was involved. But she was very careless. Nowadays everywhere drugs, I can say SL is totally different from the time when I first arrived here. Hard to find the people whom we can trust nowadays, and we can't leave any of our items anywhere, It's the msg I can give to all tourists. I don't think only the government issue, even my country's government has corruption and living cost is so high now after corona, still I value honesty and live without disturbing others, out of my respect to my parents, otherwise no meaning of my life. But one thing, I sincerely respect the Buddhist culture here, and I've never touched any alcohol in my whole life, not only on poya. Intoxicants make us careless, as we see in this case as well. We can't blame others, then.

So, she consumed liquor with the suspects, so the suspects thought she was ready for fulfilling their desires. These suspects should be put away in jail for 10 to 15 years and any property, bank accounts in their name should be confiscated and used for their jail expenses.

Too many stories of single women tourists being attacked. Tourists too must have common sense in a 3rd world country. You may have a false sense of security since you are a foreigner but reality is you are a target. Stop drinking with people you don't know and don't go walking in lonely places at day or night.

It's a cultural thing, I'm a Sri Lankan currently in KL where my daughter studies. Here tourists as well as local ladies can be seen even wearing butt shorts but no one gives them a second glance. Society should be educated to value differences and respect others which is basic and primary for a better society where our women and children can be safe

These news items damage Srilankan tourism industry. Was it worth to publish this news? Better have awareness sessions and provide info to tourists specially solo back packers. Also make laws to give harsh punishments so people would think twice before attempting unlawful acts.

Foreigners must be adviced when they reach sri lanka for safty measures with guidelines. majority fellows are dangerous and desperate foriegners are easy targets specialy young middle-aged girls we must take responsibility to protect tourist from danger before its toolate.....

Foreigner or local, why should a young woman spend time drinking alcohol with people you have never acquainted before? It could well be a set up by these men to drug and rape her at will. Foreigners must ensure their safety in a foreign country by staying well away from situations that might lead to grave danger - common sense!
