Three-wheeler drivers today said that they will reduce the taxi fares only if the Power and Energy Ministry allows another 30 litres of petrol for their three-wheeled vehicles.
The National Joint Three-Wheeler Drivers and Industrial Workers Association (NJTWDIWA) Secretary Rohana Perera said that there would be no taxi fare revision with the liter of 92 octane petrol by Rs. 40.
"The fuel price was reduced by Rs. 100 since the price was at Rs. 470. The current price is Rs.370. This will not help to continue with the service as the taxes on lubricants, tyres, tubes, batteries, and vehicle service charges which are still on the higher side," he said.
"Our association had several discussions with the Power and Energy Minister and appealed for 30 litres of fuel per week to continue with the service and to earn a living. During the discussion, a proposal was made to implement a program to identify professional three-wheeler drivers to provide fuel through the National Transport Commission (NTC).
As an association, we have completed the task of sending a list of 20,000 professional three-wheeler drivers to the Ministry to make them easy to implement the program. The list was sent two months ago, and the Minister has yet to respond.
"The association is still being given five litres of petrol for a week," Perera charged.
Therefore, the association has come to a conclusion not to make any taxi fare revisions until they are given 30 litres of petrol for six days, Perera added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
