Train services hampered on up-country line

Colombo, May 24 - Sri Lanka Railways announced significant delays on the up-country train line today after trees and rocks fell onto the tracks causing widespread disruption to services.

In addition to the delays, the Department of Railways confirmed the cancellation of the night mail trains to and from Badulla.

Further, several other special trains scheduled to run on the up-country line today have also been cancelled.

Efforts are currently underway to clear the tracks and restore normal services as quickly as possible.

Nice to see Sri Lanka's first Diesel Electric Locomotive, the class M1 built by Brush Bagnall Traction powered by a 1,000Hpo Mirless Engine in the photograph. It was introduced to service in 1951. The upcountry night mail was hauled by a double heading using two M1 locomotives. The operated in tandem.

If my understanding is correct some diesel multiple units were brought to Sri Lanka in 1938 to run on the coast line. They were later converted to the diesel de luxe trains for private travel. However, I, too. love the M1 engines that bring nostalgic memories of the train journeys we enjoyed as children.

Yes, seeing the Brush-Bagnell ( M1) was nostalgic for me too. Obviously lesser number of compartments, with 1000*2 HP.
