Tourists join rescue efforts after Ella–Wellawaya bus tragedy

A large number of foreign tourists rushed to assist the injured in the aftermath of the fatal bus accident that took place last night (04) on the Ella–Wellawaya main road.

Eyewitnesses said several tourists who were in the area at the time came forward to help emergency responders, with some offering first aid and others assisting in moving the injured to safety.

Among them were healthcare workers, including a female foreigner who actively supported Sri Lankan doctors and paramedics during the rescue operation.

Rescue teams, including the police, military and local residents, carried out a joint effort through the night to treat and transfer victims to nearby hospitals.

This is very commendable. I think we should make first aid training mandatory for all citizens. At least once in six months there should be a first aid training facilitated by corresponding company and agency that person work or study. Imagine the number of lives we can save even with basic training.

If such tragedies continue, tourists will not want to come to Sri Lanka, unless road safety is taken seriously. Road fatalities are unnecessary and preventable. It is time for anction immediately. Driver Behavior Speeding: Driving too fast for the conditions or exceeding the speed limit is a major cause of crashes and increases the severity of injuries when a crash occurs. Impaired Driving: Driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs significantly increases crash risk and is a leading cause of fatal accidents. Distraction: Using a mobile phone or other handheld devices, or being distracted by passengers or in-car systems, takes a driver's focus away from the road. Driver Fatigue: Driving when tired leads to a reduction in focus and reaction time, increasing the risk of losing control of the vehicle. Reckless/Careless Driving: Actions such as running red lights, making unsafe turns, or generally driving without sufficient care contribute to fatal accidents.

Lalith, I just returned from Ella and even traveled on this road on 31 Aug. As a tourist I will still return to holiday in SL. The risk to tourists is mitigated as we use private cars. The people that pay the price are the locals.

True frienship only could be judged when one is in the doldrums but however some of our politicians always cast aspersions on foreigners under the false notion that these foreigners are coming into this country to disrupt the ordinary life of the people. Once a sleepy little town called Ella is fast becoming the drug den of Sri Lanka where low budget tourists and some locals are seen high on drugs. No wonder there are far too many accidents on this stretch of road in the hill country recently.
