Total water capacity of irrigation reservoirs estimated at 75%



Colombo, Dec. 11 (Daily Mirror) - Considering the current heavy rainy weather, the total water capacity of the irrigation reservoirs has increased to 75 percent, the Irrigation Department said.

They said the 40 reservoirs controlled by the department have reached their spill levels.

However, the water capacity of the Senanayaka Samudraya in the Ampara district and the Hurulu Oya reservoir in the Anuradhapura district has reached 44 percent and 50 percent, respectively.

Moreover, the department said the water levels of reservoirs under the Mahaweli Authority has increased, and the total capacity is 85 percent.

Meanwhile, four reservoirs controlled by the Mahaweli Authority have reached their spill level.

Therefore, the Irrigation Department said water can be used at its maximum for uninterrupted supply for hydropower generation and drinking purposes.
