The toque monkey sterilisation project, recently implemented to address the threat posed by toque monkeys in several areas of the country, has failed.
The pilot project, which began in Harasgama in the Matale District, has now been stalled.Matale District Director of Agriculture Ajitha Manikuma stated at today’s District Coordinating Committee meeting that the project had come to a halt due to several challenges. The meeting was chaired by Matale District Secretary Thejani Tilakaratne at the District Secretariat.
The Director of Agriculture highlighted that a shortage of veterinary surgeons to perform the sterilisations and the high costs of transporting monkeys to the Girithale Veterinary Unit were the primary obstacles. She stated that she had informed the Minister of Buddha Sasana and Cultural Affairs and Chairman of the Coordinating Committee, Gamagedara Dissanayaka, as well as the Deputy Minister of Agricultural Development, regarding these issues.
The official pointed out that equipment required for the project would cost about Rs.12 million.
