Colombo, February 22 (Daily Mirror) - Three people were injured when a Coastal Line train collided with a cab at a railway crossing in Payagala earlier today, the Railways Department said.

They said the accident disrupted train services along the Coastal Line, causing delays while the site was cleared and emergency response teams attended to the injured.

Therefore, the Department urged motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution at railway crossings and strictly follow safety rules to prevent similar incidents. The condition of the injured individuals is being monitored at a nearby hospital.

An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the collision, the Railways Department said.

Level crossing accidents often happen due to the negligence of the motorists. Why don't the railway instal a system for the train to activate a boom gate to close when passing a point 100 or 150 meters before the level crossing. I am not an Engineer or a Tech person but verily believe it is possible. The boom gate can be activated to open when the train travels 100 or 150 meters past the crossing. Railway engineers try to work on this suggestion

Atleast this is a proper ‘cab’! Usually they refer to goods carrying trucks as a cab. Also , surprisingly they didn’t refer to this as a ‘Luxury’ vehicle!
