Tharanga at home in Rome

June.05 (Mirror Sports) - Sri Lankan javelin star Rumesh Tharanga delivered a sensational performance at the Rome Diamond League athletics meeting in Italy, winning the men’s javelin throw with a remarkable effort of 92.62 metres and cementing his status as one of the world›s leading throwers.

The 23-year-old surpassed the qualification standard for the 2028 Olympic Games, setting a new Sri Lankan national record and establishing a new Rome Diamond League meet record.

Tharanga’s throw improved on his previous national record of 89.37 metres and elevated him to second place among Asian javelin throwers.

The mark also placed him eighth on the all-time world list for men’s javelin throw. Tharanga emerged victorious ahead of Anderson Peters of Grenada, who recorded 83.91m, and Curtis Thompson of the United States, who finished with 83.89m.

The performance has strengthened Tharanga’s prospects of becoming Sri Lanka’s first athlete to secure qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games and has significantly boosted the country’s hopes of achieving success on the global athletics stage.



The historic victory is regarded as one of the finest performances ever produced by a Sri Lankan athlete in international athletics.
