Colombo, January (Daily Mirror) - The government has approved a proposal to revise the fees charged for issuing temporary driving licences under the Motor Vehicles (Driving Licence Levy) Regulations No. 3 of 2022, which were prepared under the Motor Traffic Act.
Authorities said the decision was taken after identifying the need to update the existing fee structure to better reflect the services provided in issuing temporary driving licences.
The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) issues temporary driving licences to foreign nationals based on driving licences issued overseas. At present, this service is provided by the DMT office in Werahera.
Steps have also been taken to offer this service through a special service counter at the Bandaranaike International Airport from August 3, 2025, to make it more convenient for travellers.
Officials said the current fee of Rs. 2,000 is not sufficient to cover the costs involved in operating the new service counter at the airport.
Accordingly, revised fees have been introduced through an extraordinary gazette notification No. 2463/04 dated November 17, 2025.
