Teachers to launch islandwide strike tomorrow

Colombo, June 11 (Daily Mirror) - An islandwide trade union action is scheduled to be launched after school, targeting all Zonal Education Centres over several demands, including the provision of the promised remaining salary, the Ceylon Teachers' Union (CTU) General Secretary Joseph Stalin said.

He told the Daily Mirror that all paper marking at all marking centres will stop at 1 p.m. tomorrow, as they join the trade union action demanding the provision of the remaining two-thirds of the salary increment promised to school principals and teachers.

The CTU demands that the Education Ministry provide the allocated Rs. 46 billion funds as payment for teachers and principals, insisting that the funds be assigned this year.

Additionally, the CTU has called for an increase in paper marking charges. Despite a committee being appointed last year to address this issue, the charges have not been increased, he said.

Stalin also mentioned that they demand a reduction in the burden on parents regarding school expenses and an end to the practice of collecting funds from parents.

We have teachers who are teaching how not to work, how to create trouble and how to dangle carrots to parents (other stake holders) to make the support more widespread. So our future generations will be "Aragalaya ready" and "Waliyata bara" certified students. At least use the school holidays for strikes rather than disrupting the kids education. Selfish morons.

Sri Lanka had a good chance after the aragalaya and major instability to cut down unproductive government sector and get rid of trade unions as well. For example should have paid salary in installments and delays so that majority will leave.Instead the power greedy ranil started giving salary hikes and unnecessary benefits for certain sectors hoping that it will help in a future election. Now all sectors are demanding various things. He never learn a lesson. During yahapalanaya the government sector salaries were raised by 7500 but almost two third of government sector voted for gota.

Teachers are a neglected lot in our society. They have been grossly underpaid for many decades. If they refrain from working the effect is not felt immediately, as in the case of doctors and nurses. So they have had to suffer silently. Successive governments have abused this situation to their advantage and have neglected to pay the teachers what is justly due to them. So let the teachers rise up and stand for their rights.

NPP is again out with a Teachers strike. Count the damages caused by these disruptive activities. It would be in billions. Very pathetic situation. We inly hear about strikes from teachers and never hear about their achievements in teaching. Students survive because if tuition masters who make billions in very short time.

Teachers are role models for their students. It is not appropriate to go for strike demanding salary hike. Today teaching has commercialized. Some expenses that to be born by teachers are diverted to the students and their parents in schools. Today teachers have identified a business techniques that online classes for every grade, sometimes for primary students too. They whats app their notes to the parents and asking them to send the print hard copy with their children when attending for the classes. Today parents meetings used as a tool in schools as how to grab money from parents by showing the broken tables and chairs and undated buildings. It would be helpful for parents if President consider these in future. Their should be a law that prevent teachers going for strike for the betterment of our future generation.

They are very wary of collecting funds from parents. Teachers charge very high amounts from students for private tuition. Nowadays it is very poor quality of teaching especially in OL

The Labour union strikes too had contributed negatively to our country in the past 74 years after Independence. They always target the Election period and win their demands by inconveniencing the public and make a hole in the budget. All should understand that we as a nation inching out of the economic crisis just an year and a half ago. Let's sacrifice a bit for another year or two with financial discipline and attitude change for Sri Lanka to be stable once more.

Another salary claim! I thought teachers would no longer be needed in SL as schools have become irrelevant. Tuition masters rule all education in SL now and almost all kids go to tuition classes from grade 1. Why need schools? The other things is parents are happily paying tuition fees demanded by the tuition masters, but start protesting if the government asks them to pay even 10 Rs as a fee.
