Talent without brain or shame: Arjuna slams Sri Lanka cricket team

Colombo, Nov 25 (Daily Mirror) - Former Sri Lanka cricket captain Arjuna Ranatunga criticised the current national team, saying the players possess talent but lack the brains to play intelligently and the shame to accept defeat gracefully.

Speaking at an event with a group of students, Ranatunga said while the current players are talented, they lack the discipline and mindset required for international cricket.

“The ones who learn have the brain to judge how to face the ball, how to bowl and how to take a catch,” he said.

Ranatunga also criticised the cricket administration, saying mistakes by officials are affecting the players.

“We can’t point a finger at a child if the parents are doing wrong. The same issue applies to Sri Lanka Cricket. I have been raising these concerns for several years,” he said.

Comparing the current squad with the 1996 team, he said, “The players today are more talented. However, they need discipline, dedication and a sense of shame when they lose. When I lost a match, I didn’t even come out of the dressing room. Today, everything is about money.”

Ranatunga advised young students not to pursue cricket purely for financial gain.

“If players focus on playing good cricket for 10 to 12 years, the money will eventually come. That is the right approach,” he said.
