Colombo, January. 10 (Daily Mirror) - The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) has made it mandatory to enter the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) when registering vehicles and transferring vehicle ownership, with effect from January 5.
According to a statement issued by the DMT, the requirement applies to the new registration database as well as the ownership transfer database maintained by the Department.
Under the new regulation, the National Identity Card (NIC) number or Business Registration number, along with the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) of the relevant new owner, must be entered into the system when registering new vehicles or transferring ownership.
However, the requirement will not apply to motorcycles, hand tractors, tractors, tractor trailers and three-wheelers, the Department said.
