Colombo, January 9 (Daily Mirror) - The Supreme Court will resume operations at the newly refurbished original Supreme Court building at the Superior Courts Complex with effect from January 26, 2026, the Registrar of the Supreme Court announced.
Accordingly, all court houses, record rooms and other branches of the Supreme Court will function from the refurbished premises from that date.
The Supreme Court was temporarily relocated to the new MCC Building on Adhikarana Mawatha, Colombo 12, from January 15, 2025, to facilitate extensive refurbishment work at the Superior Courts Complex.
The refurbishment project is being funded by the Government of China through grants, aimed at modernising the Superior Courts Complex, which was originally gifted to Sri Lanka by China in 1989.
Phase One of the project, which involved the Court of Appeal, was completed in early 2025. Phase Two, covering the Supreme Court, includes the refurbished courtrooms, modern facilities and significant improvements to infrastructure, with the objective of enhancing efficiency, accessibility and overall judicial administration.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court Registrar announced that due to the shifting process, new cases filed before the Supreme Court between January 16, 2026, and January 26, 2026, will be subject to a slight delay in processing.
In addition, motions filed during the same period will not be processed unless there is extreme urgency. Such urgency must be clearly stated in the relevant motion, the Registrar emphasised.
