Strong winds, rough seas from Galle to Pottuvil: Alert issued



Colombo, June 16 (Daily Mirror) - The Meteorology Department has issued a strong wind and rough sea warning for sea areas extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota, urging naval and fishing communities to remain highly vigilant.

According to the warning issued at 10.30 a.m. today (16), sea areas off the southern and eastern coasts are expected to become rough at times, with strong gusty winds reaching up to 50–60 kmph.

The sea areas extending from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota are also expected to experience increased wave heights of around 2.0 to 2.5 metres, posing risks for maritime activities.

Fishermen and seafarers have been advised to pay close attention to future forecasts issued by the Department of Meteorology and to avoid venturing into hazardous sea conditions.

The warning remains valid until 10.30 a.m. on June 17, 2026.

Authorities have classified the risk level as high to very high in affected sea zones and have urged maritime communities to take necessary safety precautions.
