Stranded conductor found during major inspection in Colombo

Colombo, April 23 (Daily Mirror) - A routine inspection in Colombo took an unusual turn this morning when a bus conductor was found left behind after his own bus reportedly drove off without him.

The incident happened during a special operation carried out by the Western Provincial Road Passenger Transport Authority, based in Bambalapitiya. The operation was aimed at checking private buses for rule violations such as overcharging passengers and not issuing tickets.

During the inspection, officials found the stranded conductor. He told them, “The bus left me… I am the conductor.” The Road Inspector first told him to find another way to travel, suggesting he take a three-wheeler.

Later, the inspector arranged for the conductor to board another bus and instructed the driver to take him on board.

Officials said the original bus driver had apparently left in a hurry and forgot to pick up the conductor.

In the same operation, about 100 buses were checked within one and a half hours. Around 70 buses were fined for different violations.

The incident has raised questions about discipline and management in the private bus service, while authorities continue their checks to ensure passengers are not overcharged and are properly served.
