Colombo, Feb 12 (Daily Mirror) - SriLankan Airlines said that that flight UL 605, en route from Melbourne to Colombo, safely returned to Melbourne Airport shortly after takeoff at 18:16hrs (Melbourne time) today, due to a technical issue.

All passengers onboard the flight disembarked safely following the return to the airport. A team of engineers is currently assessing the aircraft and providing necessary technical support to address the issue, the SriLankan said.

All passengers have been accommodated in hotels until the rescheduling of the flight for departure.

Corrupt chairman and corrupt minister are destroying the airline.

Boycott until Drastic Measures Taken Tuesday, 13 February 2024 09:15 AM

As previously mentioned sometime back, downsize the operations until newer aircraft are leased or purchased. Until than, it’s better to boycott the airline until drastic measures are taken. If not, the taxpayers are just supporting a dying company!

    Amara Tuesday, 13 February 2024 11:24 AM

This is a technical fault. I also smelled the smoke while take off from melbourne 2nd friday. It's good that they turned back and repaired. This flight is flying to Melbourn and just within less than one hour it flies back to colombo. Sri Lankan is not bad! I love to fly again.

Kabir Hashim Monday, 12 February 2024 08:01 PM

Worst airline ever, overstaffed with lazy and rude lackeys of political leeches.

Kumara Choksanada Monday, 12 February 2024 08:02 PM

    CEO is a nut.

If you are taking srilankan airlines be ready for delays. We are very popular being late but we get there sooner or later..

Rip Winkle Monday, 12 February 2024 08:36 PM

On 3rd February a flight to Sydney was first delayed owing to technical issues forcing the passengers to suffer for 7 hours in the miserable airport until it was finally cancelled. Much chaos within the ground staff. Foreign tourists were called from the back of the line and provided with alternative flights while Australians and New Zealanders of Sri Lankan origin who were at the front of the queue were forced to spend the night at a lousy hotel. Srilankan airlines truly sucks and everybody should be advised to never travel on this airline.

    Companion Monday, 12 February 2024 11:01 PM

You should be appreciative that you were provided food and accommodation. Were you expecting that they provide a companion to spend the night with?

    Mahila Tuesday, 13 February 2024 04:33 AM

If Sri Lankan Origin FULLY PAID (FP) Passengers, irrespective of their citizenship status is BELOW that of Foreign Tourists of whatever description, Sri Lankans’ shouldn’t be made, SCAPEGOATS OR INEQUAL TRETAMENT by CEO, Sri Lankan Airline (SLA)!? Definitely, ENJOY BETTER TREATMENT in “other” Airlines as ‘FP’ passengers!? Remember, “SLA” tried but failed, “OFF-LOADING” ‘FP’ passengers – ‘London HRW to BIA-CMB’, Accommodate ‘MaRa Messiah’s gang of Revellers’!? led to “untimely TERMINATION” of PROFITABLE, ‘SLA – EMIRATES JV’, (2007)!!?? Loss-Making since then – USD Billions – departure of then CEO, Peter Hill!? This is OUTRIGHT DESCRIMINATION and UNEQUAL JUSTICE (UJ)!! 'UJ' has been, “BYWORD or MOTTO” of SLA and therefore, AVOIDED, or WRONG WORD - BOYCOTTED – ‘NOT UNPATRIOTIC’? It’s REGAINING One’s “Lost Rights”!!??!!! “Tourists only Reliant Airline”, isn’t Nationalistic, best left alone”!?

Over aged aircrafts like our over aged politicians.

    Gabriella Monday, 12 February 2024 11:36 PM

Yes, planes should have been upgraded many years ago. Having an aircraft without inflight entertainment is unheard of these days. But don’t blame the CEO for the Rajapaksa legacy.

@rip Someone knowingly do something aware of the consequences whom should you blame??

    Navi Monday, 12 February 2024 10:52 PM

With all the short comings, SriLankan is a safe airline with no major incidents. It has a clean track record when it comes to safety.

    Jeanne Tuesday, 13 February 2024 01:33 PM

No airline "incident" is safe. Are you mental?

    Amaran Monday, 12 February 2024 11:32 PM

These additional expenses of accommodating passengers in a hotel and bad reputation can be avoided by leasing a good condition aircraft.

    Jude Tuesday, 13 February 2024 01:07 AM

The SriLankan airlines cumulative loss since 2009 (after arbitrary terminating Emirates management contract) is over one trillion rupees yeah people Not billion it's over TRILLION rupees!! Huh. Can't understand why government still funding the eternally money losing airline.

    Jeanne Tuesday, 13 February 2024 03:50 AM

Business as usual!!! Can't stop laughing!!! What's Mr Nutsack's response to this latest embarrassment? I thought he said that delays were caused because aircraft was being thoroughly checked before takeoff. Evidently that was a lie too!

Nilmini Welivita Tuesday, 13 February 2024 04:52 AM

Close it down or sell it off, the airline is a drain on the economy. At this rate it's only a matter of time before a major disaster.

    wsw Tuesday, 13 February 2024 06:17 AM

Corrupt and inefficient politicians voted in by gullible constituents have mercilessly looted from our state enterprises over the years with a special focus on Sri Lankan Airlines.

One day it will end up in indian ocean, then siripala will wake up.

    UL605 is a joke Tuesday, 13 February 2024 01:31 PM

That's actually not funny at all.

    Mahesh Tuesday, 13 February 2024 07:07 AM

Once an efficient airline when it was managed by Emirates and MR had took back control when he was a president to milk more money for his family’s gain and we are now suffering from the consequences. Look at what wealth the Raja family accumulated to date.

    Sambo Tuesday, 13 February 2024 07:49 AM

Don't tell me as to how Sri Lankan provides accommodation to such passengers. You are playing with the lives of passengers. Please don't fly those aircraft if it is not fit or air worthy.

    Ronnie Tuesday, 13 February 2024 08:08 AM

Sri Lankan airlines is a top class airline for many years due to poor technical support staff that cause many issues other issue is experience staff taking oputunity overseas Hopefully things get better soon

Loosing Customers in the Long Term Tuesday, 13 February 2024 09:16 AM

Downsize the operations until newer aircraft are leased or purchased. Until than, it’s better to boycott the airline until drastic measures are taken. If not, the taxpayers are just supporting a dying company!

    N.M. Perera Tuesday, 13 February 2024 10:34 AM

Useless Airline !! Delays ruin a planned holiday and flight connectivity !! It is MR.... who bankrupted the Country as per Court Ruling..... Who ruined this too.

Sepalee Weerasuriya Tuesday, 13 February 2024 11:20 AM

Totally agree with RIp Winkle, we had a similar experience with them for a different flight cancellation and they served the foreigners first while we were in front of the queue and rescheduled our flights with very short transit times. Also didn’t retag our bags properly to reach the final destination. We are still looking for our bags.

    Ding Tuesday, 13 February 2024 11:45 AM

Modi must take over the Sri Lankan airline

    anil Tuesday, 13 February 2024 12:36 PM

Adani must take over Sri Lankan airlines, ports, railways etc.

Sorry Sena Tuesday, 13 February 2024 02:29 PM

The stewardess burnt a piece of chicken in the oven and smoke entered the cabin. Hell broke lose and the plane had to return. For shree lankanaites delays do not matter. They wear watches only as a showpiece.

    Sira Saturday, 17 February 2024 02:34 AM

I fly 30 years in n out of sri Lanka now but never fly with sri Lankan.
