Sri Lanka should not become a victim or intermediary in Middle East war: Minister

Colombo, March 4 (Daily Mirror) - Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said that Sri Lanka should never become an intermediary or a victim in the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Addressing the media, he said that the country hopes to intervene in any possible way, whether through formal requests or diplomatic efforts, to help bring an end to the hostilities.

“We express our condolences to all those who have lost their lives leaders, diplomats, ordinary people, school children, and small children on all sides of the conflict. Our hope is that these conflicts will end soon, and that all parties will resolve their differences through negotiations,” he said.

Dr. Jayatissa said that post-World War II international institutions were established to prevent such conflicts, and as members, countries including Sri Lanka have a responsibility to support peace efforts. “With modern technology, conflicts are no longer limited to one geographical area, and we cannot predict when or where they may escalate. As a nation, we will do everything we can through requests or actions to intervene,” he added.

He also highlighted the risks faced by Sri Lankans abroad and the broader threat to the global economy. “War has never brought progress; it is always the common people who suffer. Our stance is clear: Sri Lanka should not become a pawn or a victim in this war. We are committed to preventing these conflicts through words and deeds,” he concluded.
