Sri Lanka calls for protection of civilians amid Middle East conflict: Namal

Colombo, March 3 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka has expressed deep concern over reports of civilians being injured in the Middle East due to missile interceptions and strikes, reportedly carried out by armed forces on buildings, shopping malls, and hotels. Many civilians are reportedly seeking safe shelters, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser Namal Rajapaksa said.

In a message posted on 'X', Rajapaksa said that “the safety of civilians should never be compromised during any military action or conflict,” according to a statement from Sri Lankan authorities. The statement urged all parties to ensure the protection of civilians in all affected countries, including in the Middle East.

Highlighting the region’s importance to Sri Lanka, the statement said that thousands of Sri Lankan nationals are currently employed in the Middle East and that the country maintains strong diplomatic ties with the region.

“Any unprovoked actions targeting civilians, economic centers, or critical infrastructure are unacceptable,” the statement added. “Such acts only exacerbate instability and spread fear and chaos globally.”
